-- My car's timing chain snapped two weeks ago
The Audi's timing chain went about two weeks ago - Oddly it happened after the dealer had it (the next morning from getting it back, actually) - It really doesn't matter - you have no legs vs. a dealer and besides they'd have to dissect the engine to access that area. So in this case I actually do think it was just a mere coincidence.
Anyhow; ?? I'm wondering if anyone has recovered a vehicle from this timing chain issue ?? - again it's an 06 Audi A4 3.2 I bought a really fast vehicle & all - but black'ey can't be buried yet. anyone else gone through this? I forget the details regarding the engine's structural assembly. There are two types - one where you're basically in a repairable situation or two - you're ****ed. Help Please.... |

the way I understand it is - it's like a bike-chain that snakes throughout the center of the motor and it's tension mends (for lack of a better word) the engine's components together - when it snaps - the engine inners under fold - pardon my n00b terminology, I'm just doing the best I can w/ the lingo. Jason Sauto should show up soon, i'm hoping.

My timing belt broke on my 3.0 toyota truck while driving down the hwy. Put a new one on and she's as good as new. I think the two motors you are talking about are interface and non interface. Are you sure the the chain is broken? They're known to stretch. Aren't there some good Audi forums on the net?

on my last service receipt/work order it says something like - "Timing Chain - Engine repair, start with motor-mounts" ..or something like that as if to say 'it's a mission'

The difference between interference and non interference is that in a non interference there is enough valve/piston relief that even if the valves are fully open they won't contact the piston. Hence the valves and pistons don't interfere with each other. In interference motors they do and frankly if you've got a high performance engine it's almost certainly and interference motor. It would take a pretty low compression motor to be non-interference. In short when your timing chain breaks one or more of your valves stays open. You piston comes up to greet said open valve. Pistion V valve and the piston wins. Valve bends and then generally breaks off. The valve head now drops into the cylinder with the piston and proceeds to beat the shit out of the top of the piston, cylinder walls and head. Remember you motor is running at N thousand RPMs per minute. Even if it shuts off quick it's too late. In short if it broke your motor is toast(if it's interference). Technically it can be possible to fix it but you'd have to replace the cylinder sleeves, the pistons, and the full head at minimum. It would very likely cost significantly more than a new motor and be less reliable. But how many miles are on the car? Timing belts are designed to be replaced. But if I recall most if not all timing chains are designed to last the life of the motor. Just checked the 3.2L and it's 12.5 compression so it's definitely an interference motor. Sorry if the timing chain broke it's toast...sometimes you get the short straw with these things.

If a timing chain failed I'd be surprised. Timing belts are usually replaced every 60k miles (some have longer intervals) to avoid breakage and damage to the engine. |

40-50 years ago this was true, now timing belts breaking are not a death sentence.

How so? With an “interference” engine yes it is very likely a death sentence, and being an Audi DOHC V-6 it’s most likely an interference engine.
