First of all, let me say I did not get fired for posting on this board so much the last few days. I did not get fired at all. The reason I have posted so much lately is because: 1) I have all of my work done; 2) I have been strangely motivated lately. Also, there is no monitoring software used by my company, so it wouldn’t matter anyway. :)
I am looking for a new job for a number of reasons. 1. The company I work for was recently purchased and my position is under question. They call it “streamlining.” I call it “firing those they think they don’t need.” 2. My boss is incompetent, yet will never get fired. This is not that “my boss sucks” kind of thing. I like her as a person. But she knows nothing about what we do here (printing). I’m curious on how she got the job, as is everyone who has to deal with her. Her boss, however, is much like Carl Peterson: he will never admit he made a mistake in hiring someone. 3. No room for advancement. I’m pretty much stuck where I am. My qualifications: 1. Worked in printing industry for four years (three in pre-press and one in print-production. I currently do some design work, I handle all print-shop purchasing and develop all print schedules). 2. Knowledge of the complete printing process, from initial concept to finished product. 3. Experience with Quark, PageMaker, MSWord, Excel, Photoshop (some) and a little Illustrator, all on Macintosh. 4. Strong writing and editing skills 5. Knowledge of AP style. 6. Dependable and dedicated worker who learns very, very quickly. I know I’ll receive a few colorful and creative job opportunities, but I am serious about this. I have checked Monster.com, the Star, thingamajob and a few others and, to be honest, haven’t found much here in Kansas City. If any of you know someone looking for someone with my qualifications, please let me know either by this board, or e-mail me at mmdye919@aol.com (I can’t believe I’m giving that out, but oh well! It will only be valid for another month or so anyway. Easy on the spam, please! :D ) Also, I just can’t accept anything under $12.50 an hour...I can’t afford to take a cut in pay (not yet, at least). Thanks in advance for any help! MM ~~Needs a job with a future. |

You say your boss doesn't suck. That's too bad considering your boss is female.

Mark M.
When the job market in my field got soft in the KC area I had to move to get a new position with a good company. I landed a very good job in South Carolina and am happy to have made the move a few years back. Funny thing is, I just accepted a position with another company in Charlotte, NC that is a step up. I would say that unless you are dead set on staying in the KC area, expand you search to the surrounding states. Or even look coastal like I did. Good luck finding a position! mark ************ |

HC--
Actually, I work for an insurance company in their marketing deptartment. Why, is Josten's hiring? :) Kilgore-- After the recent weather here, my wife and I are considering a move to AZ or NM. Problem: We just bought a house and need a little equity in it before we move. We're thinking in 5 years or so. Doubt it will happen, though. Thanks for all the help guys. My search will continue for the next few weeks, so I may bring this thread to the top every once in a while. If it gets annoying, I'm sorry. I'm just getting a bit desperate. MM ~~Hard worker. |

Mark... have you tried Hallmark cards... when I interned there that's all I heard about was their press people and such... I suggest you find a friend that works there and have them turn in your resume or something like that.

Mark - hehe, I don't know... probably. I was just wondering because the description of your current position quite mirrors Jostens:
(1)Recently Purchased - going through 'streamlining' (2)Incompetent management (how's that for an oxy-moron?) (3)No room for advancement Your qualifications matchup to a desktop position there... perfectly! They use PageMaker, Quark, a bit of Photoshop and Illustrator. Their payscale falls into your range as well - but perhaps not right away. |

Sorry I can't help you much on the job finding, but to lend a little moral support, the same thing happened to me about 5 yrs ago. Our company was purchased, and they didn't know what to do with me either. I was old enough, 55, they were afraid of an age discrimination suit, especially since I worked in HR, and they brought some "lady", though my own interpretation of her would have started with a B, in as my supervisor. After three miserable years, I finally got a buy out, and am now happily retired. I know this doesn't help, but hang in there, and keep searching. As a postscript, two months after I left her husband got transferred to Tampa, and they were left with hiring someone. They called me, and I definitely had the last laugh. HELL NO, I'm not interested.

We can let the thread die!!!! :D :D :D
roger-- I actually submitted an application to Hallmark as a writer about three months ago. I never heard anything, so I thought they thought my resume sucked. But when I get home today, inside the mailbox, in a sealed envelope, was a writer's portfolio for Hallmark! I have ten different things I need to do, although I've just glanced at it so far. I'm going to look at it later tonight. A bit nervous. From what I hear they don't send those to everyone. So it's gotta be good. Lot's of pressure (not quite as easy as the idiot team roster). I might not be around for a few days. But I'll keep you all posted. And thank you for your support, guys. :D :D :D MM ~~Happy as a lark! ------------------ One of the great things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures. --George W. Bush |

That is great!
You'll love Hallmark. I didn't enjoy it too much because it was corporate america and I enjoy real relationshipa instead of faking and smiling every five minutes at the thought of someone looking at you. But other than that... different strokes for different folks. You have to have your best preperation here. for sure.. you'll be making more than 12.50 you'll prorbably be in the $15.00 range. They're benefits are hard to find anywhere else. And it really is a great environment for the right person. Good Luck! I mean that with sincerety. |
