Friday AM update (UWRF)
Friday, Aug. 5 , 2005 Morning
K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Daily Updates Things are finally cooling down in River Falls. At the start of practice the temperature was 72 degrees and the dew point was 56 degrees with no wind. This morning had the largest turnout of camp so far this summer—about 550 fans. The cool and comfortable summer air of west-central Wisconsin is bringing out the fans! Offense After suffering a mild concussion Monday night, Priest Holmes will practice this afternoon. Holmes did not practice this morning, not because of the injury, but because many of the veterans only practice once a day. Freddie Mitchell is back in town, although he elected not to have his knee scoped. Because he did not have the procedure, Mitchell said he plans on getting back onto the field sooner."Only time will tell if the decision is right; it's risky," Coach Dick Vermeil stated. A timetable has not been set for when Mitchell will return to practice. Offensive Lineman Coach Mike Solari had many words of encouragement for his players at the beginning of practice today. "Everybody got better, and now it's time for week two!" During one-on-one drills, Solari also gave the players some tips, "Get those hands up, block with your body, hands behind your back," were among the many tips that Solari offered. During a 7-on-7 red zone drill quarterback Damon Huard had a great pass to wide receiver John Booth into the end zone. Fans were applauding and yelling nice pass from 50-yards away. In the second session of 11-on-11's guard Brian Waters had great coverage for running back Dante Hall , who received a hand off and completed a 20-yard run. In the final session of 11-on-11's, wide receiver John Booth caught a great 40-yard pass from quarterback James Kilian . Booth caught the pass after it hit the finger tips of corner back Justin Perkins . After practice the rookies stayed after for nine-minutes to run eight plays. Quarterback James Kilian was eight-eight in the extra session of 11-on-11's. Running back McKenzi Smith received two hand offs. Running back Ronnie Cruz received a hand off for a run to the right. Running back Dee Brown received a pass for ten-yards. Running back Samkon Gado received two hand offs and caught one. One handoff Gado completed a great 30-yard run. Afterwards Coach Vermeil had encouraging words for Gado, "Sam your hot, you got a streak going. Momentum!" Quarter back James Kilian faked a hand off and ran the ball. Offensive linemen in the extra session were; center Mike Johnson , guards Thomas Barnett and Aaron Johnson and tackles Will Svitek and Jeremy Parquet . Defensive linemen included; ends Clint Mitchell and Zach Ville and tackles Darius Jones and Arrion Dixon . Linebackers were Kevin DeRonde , Derrick Johnson , Kris Griffin , Rich Scanlon and Boomer Grigsby . In the secondary were cornerbacks Alphonso Hodge and Justin Perkins and safeties Shaunard Harts and Scott Connot . After practice, wide receivers Nathaniel Curry, Jeris McIntyre , and Darrell Hill worked with the JUGS machines. Defense Linebacker Keyaron Fox practiced on the right side of the defensive line this morning. Coach Dick Vermeil said that he wanted him to be able to work both sides, so that if a linebacker is injured during the season, Fox will be able to cover both sides. Other linebackers will also soon follow suit. Vermeil said that Fox has been in the system long enough to handle this change and has been working hard at both summer camp and the off-season program. Linebacker Derrick Johnson was exclusively working with the first line this morning at practice. Coach Vermeil stated that the main reason for this, is that he simply needs the work, and that he has the ability to be up there. "The ones get more work that the twos, so that's where he is," said Vermeil. After practice, Coach Vermeil spoke about the linebackers progress, and said, "we've only been here a week. They're doing fine- I'm pleased with their progress. They haven't been in a real life scrimmage, we'll do that against Minnesota a week from today. I'm very pleased with their progress, from the young kids to the vets." Linebackers Shawn Barber and Mike Maslowski have not practiced yet this summer at camp. Barber is physically unable to practice, and will not be expected until after the season starts. Maslowski at this point is questionable. However, he was not at practice today, to be with his mother who had a recent bypass operation. During 11-on-11 drills defensive end Jared Allen had a sack on quarterback Todd Collins. Corner back Alphonso Hodge was also busy on the field. During 11-on-11's, he made a near interception off of quarterback James Kilian . Because he missed the ball, he dropped to the ground and did 10 pushups before rejoining the huddle. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham yelled "Damn Alphonso, catch that ball!" Special Teams Fans Extra, Extra…Read All About It! After a day off of practice yesterday, Coach Vermeil said that he liked what he saw, although it took them a while to get their motors running. He said that it is like every day off or vacation- you always have to go back! Attending today's practice this morning was Jeff Chadina , from Sports Illustrated , who pulled Coach Vermeil aside after practice for a chat. Also watching practice from the sidelines, was Brian Balldinger and Curt McAfee , from FOX NFL broadcasts. After practice line backer Boomer Grigsby was stopped to answer a few questions about life in the dorms. The rookies all stay on the fourth floor of McMillan Hall, these our Grigby's thoughts on the matter, "Trail of tears, walk of shame that's what I call it. You just look down at your feet, look up at the floors and see you're only on the second, third, and eventually you get to the top and you're little more thankful. It's not hard, it's annoying. I'd rather take an elevator, but if you can play football for five hours a day you can walk up four flights of stairs. It's just something you don't really want to do." When asked about recreation or free time, Grigsby replied, "You hardly have any free time, and when you do have free time its not exactly the time of free time that you want to do recreation. Most people are laid up in their beds sleeping. Some people don't sleep because they feel they wake up to groggy. They kind of watch T.V. or people just do what they do, talk on the phone have a little personal time. I'm into sleeping even if I'm not tired. I force myself to lay down and do lights out for a little bit, it refreshes me a little bit before night time. Yeah, I wish I had a bathroom in my room. Because by the time I get up out of bed walk down the hallway and go to the bathroom, I've been awake for like four minutes now. I'm completely alert, I might as well go to practice even at two or three in the morning. I find it hard to go back to sleep, while if the bathrooms right next to your bed. Install a little urinal or something in the guys room, then you can crawl out of bed, put an arm against the wall, you know go, and fall right back into bed that's the ideal situation for training camp," says Grigsby on the one thing he would change about the residence halls. For the first time this training camp the Chiefs offensive and defensive linemen did a two-on-two pass rush drill. The defensive linemen worked on stunts in an effort to confuse the offensive linemen's blocking schemes. Only once did the defensive linemen trick the offensive linemen. "You've got to stay square and get your hands up," offensive line Coach Mike Solari said to his players. Guard Aaron Johnson and tackle Jeremy Parquet went once and Solari encouraged them with, "this is physical - it's physical - it's physical," as he patted them on the helmets. Solari later told tackles Thomas Barnett and Will Svitek , "keep your chin in and stay inside out." After defensive tackle Arrion Dixon had a turn defensive line Coach Bob Karmelowicz talked with him about using his hands to fight off the blocker. "Don't drop your hands below your waist," Karmelowicz told defensive tackle Darius Jones . "Way to get to the quarterback!" shouted Karmelowicz when Dixon and defensive tackle Montique Sharpe ran a successful stunt. With the rest of the team running a 9-on-7 drill, quarterbacks Todd Collins and Damon Huard worked passing drills with the wide receivers going against cornerbacks. Most of the passes were 15-25 yard sideline and crossing patterns, but there were also a couple of deep balls thrown. The offensive players were working on getting the timing down on patterns. The wide receivers were working on releases against press coverage while at the same time the cornerbacks were working on press coverage techniques. Cornerbacks Ashley Ambrose and Benny Sapp had several good rotations while wide receiver Chris Horn made a couple of nice catches against tight coverage. |

I appreciate getting updates, but I wonder if any of these writers have a working knowledge of football especially when they talk about things like Fox lining up on the D-Line. |
