Oldest Piece of Clothing You Own.

This morning when I crawled out of bed, I pulled on a pair of shorts that were pretty ragged. I stopped and thought about how old these things were, and it occurred to me that I have had them since high school.

I'm coming up on 15 years from graduation, so that means they are 15 years old at minimum. But they are a brand name that indicates I likely wore them when I was still skateboarding, which I quit around the time I got a driver's license. So a more accurate guess is that they are around 17 years old. 17 freaking years these shorts have lasted. They're kind of a sweatshirt material, and I rarely wear them for more than between bed and dressed in the morning, or shower and bed at night. But over the years, these things have to have months worth of wear on them.

So what's the oldest piece of clothing you own?

I still own tank tops I wore in high school. I haven't worn a tank top in years so I'm not sure why I haven't thrown them out.

I also just recently wore out and disposed of a pair of Doc Martin boots I had purchased in '94.

I have a pair of insulated leather boots that my Dad bought for me in 1965. He stopped by the Vickers station I was working at while it was snowing and slushy. I had on soaking wet cowboy boots, he showed up about an hour later with these boots. I still wear them on occasion.

When I used to play darts a lot, I'd travel to tournaments quite a bit. There was one huge tournament in Vegas every year that would draw players from all over the world. It was all team events and after all the events were finished, people would trade their team darts shirts with other people. I still have some of those shirts around, most of them from the early 90's.

Funny story, I had this one shirt from some dart team in Hawaii. The dude I traded with looked like a freakin' sumo wrestler and the shirt was way too big for me, but they had some cool graphics and I wanted it. I rarely wore it though. Today that same shirt fits me perfectly.

I had a 1976 Pike's Peak Marathon shirt I wore occasionally for about 20 years, then got rid of it after growing way the hell out of it.

I still have my practice jersey from pee-wee football when I was in the 6th grade. It fit over shoulder pads then. I don't know that I would say that it fits now, but I still wear it from time to time anyway. I've had it for 33 years now.

I have a shirt that I have had since I was a freshman in HS. Mostly I keep it around because my wife really wants me to get rid of it, and I find it kind of funny. She said she saw me wear it too many times, but hey, it matched my eyes.

I have an Avirex bomber jacket that I got while in Junior High, during the Top Gun craze. It was extremely pricey at the time (somewhere around $300, if I remember correctly), and I have no idea how I talked my mom into buying it for me. I think I must have ransomed two birthdays and a Christmas for it. The thing still sits in my closet, despite my wife's repeated efforts to make me get rid of it. I keep telling her that bomber jackets will come in again some day. I'll really get a kick out of it if they come in when my kid is in school, and I can give the jacket to him.

I have a cute red top that my mom wore when she was my age... so about 25 years ago.

I also have a couple of old dresses that I bought from a "vintage" store; I don't know how old they are.

I still have my pink jean jacket that I just had to have in elementary school to fit in with all the "cool" girls who had colored jean jackets.

I have a bundle of threads that used to be Yogi Bear underwear.

My Huckleberry Hound socks are even older.

Both the socks and underwear are pretty uncomfortable now as I have grown since I was 7.

Bob Dole has a brown leather bomber jacket that belonged to Bob Dole's grandfather. Probably early to mid 1950s.

Bob Dole used to have (and wear) the suit that Bob Dole's grandfather is wearing in Bob Dole's parent's wedding photos (1958), but Bob Dole outgrew it around 1983.
