So glad to be home...

I'm the luckiest mother fucker on earth.

Been drinking since noon, mostly rebull-vodka, went to a buddies to watch KU game.

Driving home, realized on the highway that I got a headlight out, but have day-time-running lights that should cover me (right?)

Wrong. right before I turn into my apartment complex, a cop pulls behind me and puts on the lights. (I shove the container full of controband into my boxers)

"did you know you have a headlight out?"

"um..uh...I just...I known since the highway, was going to fix it tomorrow."

"Can I see ID and proof of insurance?"

I can't find my wallet in my pocket, so figure it must be in my little cooler pull of beer and whiskey. So, while he's shining his flashlight in my face, I reach in, clang around the empty beer bottles and find nothing. It's on the seat next to me.

"how much have you had to drink tonight?"

"um...hardly...n-n-nothing at all."

"where you coming from?"

"um...uh...watching the game at a friend's house." He takes ID and goes back to his car.

Meanwhile, I swallow the drugs in the container in my boxers, followed by some water (shit stuck in my teeth), and light up a cigarette.

He comes back. "where you headed?"

"I live right across the street, right there"

"When you gonna get that headlight fixed?"

"uh...um...first thing tomorrow, sir"

"I'm gonna give you a warning tonght. You better get right home, because I can smell some serious liquor on your breath."

"Thank you, sir"

"Have a good night."

"You are my best friend!" (yes, I actually said that)



and now I'm home to do some serious celebrating!!!!!

I was sedated most of my teen and young adult life. I've been lucky too- I've gotten myself out of more DUI's then you could ever imagine. It made me feel invincible, and as long as I had that feeling- I would continue to do what I wanted: drink, do drugs, and drive to my next fix.

Thank holy mudder of gawd I never killed anyone or myself. It took me quite a long time to grow out of it, but now I'm clean and haven't done drugs since I don't know when and stopped drinking six months ago. I now may have a drink or two here and then, but I don't feel the need to be sedated anymore.

"Sedated" there's nothing wrong with getting *****ed up like you are- just don't be an idiot and drive home. Stay at a friend's, have someone else drive you home, or call a cab. ALL of those are cheaper than if you were to get a ticket for a DUI. It may be a pain-in-the-ass to have to get your vehicle the next day, but I'd rather have to do that, then have my insurance rates go up, lose my license for a year, spend possible jail time, and endure the insurmountable court costs.

And that is ONLY if you get pulled over- wreck your vehicle and it will be even more money. Wreck your vehicle and injure yourself, and it's even greater money. Wreck your vehicle and kill someone else, and your life is over too.

I know too well that we all make a choice eventually. I'm proud of you - and pulling for you. I reduced my beverage drinking significantly last year. I'll still have 3 or 4 - 6 a few nights ago at my own home but gone are the days of 12-24 beers. I don't miss them either.

In my younger days I would get up in the morning and peer out the window to see if there were any bodies hanging off my bumper. Luckily there never were. I won't even drink one beer and drive now. I know the twentysomethings think I'm just a stupid old man but hey, I made it to be an old man. You may not.

Yes, I've had a couple of drinks and ended up driving home. But it's not after what he explained as an all day drinking affair, and not on St. Patrick's Day weekend.

He said he had been drinking since noon, drive home at least partially on the highway, had to sift through beer cans and liquor bottles to get his wallet, and swallow drugs.... and no, I've never done that. If it wasn't that, then so be it.

The cop was lazy because he thought it was a headlight issue and didn't want to deal with anything else... if you don't want to do your job, might as well not have dealt with the headlight.
