Poll Come Forth!!!

Meanwhile, here's another ... Famous Clown From History!!!!

Emmett Kelly, Sr. (1898 - 1979): "Weary Willy"

Born in Sedan, Kansas grew up on a farm in rural Missouri. Worked at Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, later joining the Cole Brothers & Clyde Beatty Circus in 1935, and joining the Mills Circus in England in the late 1930's. While performing in Europe, he performed for the Queen of Spain and Winston Churchill, among other notables. It was in London that he came to the attention of John Ringling North, who eventually signed him in 1942 for the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. Performed for the Brooklyn Dodgers as their mascot in 1956. Inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame in 1989.

Once, when I was a very small boy, my grandfather took me to the circus and I got to see Emmett Kelly wipe grandpa's shiny bald head with a shiny purple handkerchief. At the time I didn't realize I was watching greatness. I also didn't realize that handkerchiefs would no longer be used by the time I became an adult. But hey, I was maybe four, what did I know?

That is extremely cool, Mr. RJ. I've heard about EK all my life. He was a very famous clown and, apparently, had a tremendous sociological impact during the depression era by turning a downtrodden hobo into a comic figure to the delight of all. That's a great memory you have there.

Ouch that hurt.

But the Charger offense was almost as good and there is no question the Chargers defense was 100 times better, the only area the Chiefs were clearly superior was the 2003 special teams.

FAX, I never thought of that before, about his impact on depression era people. My grandparents were both of that time, I guess that explains why a circus clown was a familiar figure to them. Interesting.

I've always believed that a great deal of his popularity stemmed in large measure from the hobo routine, Mr. RJ. Of course he was very talented, but he was able to connect with all the folks who were standing in the bread lines and looking for day labor jobs. He had the ability to translate their difficulties into laughter. No easy task. A little like Chaplin's "little tramp" character, perhaps. You were very fortunate to see him perform.

I can't help you, I've successfully repressed the '03 season from my memory and I don't care much for you trying to undo all of my hard work.

06 Chargers. That team should have won a super bowl.

The 03 Chiefs were just pretenders...

I have to agree. I really thought that the Chargers would finally earn Marty the ring I thought he always deserved. Especially when he had a better team than the Broncos in the '86 and '87 seasons.

It's strange to me that we can say that Barry Sanders was great, but he never got the ring. Dan Marino was great but he never got the ring.

Know what? Marty was a great coach, but he never got the ring.
