Anyone ever had a detached retina?
'Cause I apparently do. I went to an ophthalmologist for the first time and he diagnosed an old detached retina in my right eye. I knew I was at higher risk for this due to my shitty, shitty vision but hadn't ever noticed the symptoms (floaters, flashes).

So, what am I in for?

A friend of my mom had one and my wife has symptoms of one. We are still diagnosing. You are in for all of an outpatient surgery and maybe a couple days off work.

My dad had one... he literally woke up blind in one eye one day and went to the doctor to see wtf happened. He had some sort of surgery and wore an eyepatch for a while. I'm not sure exactly the details of it because I was away at college when it all transpired about 5 years ago, but he did exhibit a lot of the symptoms you talked about like floaters and flashes in his eye. His eyesight has been pretty exceptionally bad for a long time though. The good news is he leads an active lifestyle now and I've never heard him complain about it since the procedure.

My daughter had a detached retina, at least in her case it was due to premature birth and the retina's were not fully developed. In her case, she has laser surgery that basically killed the part of the retina that was detaching. That was 17 years ago and she is fine today. She has limited periphial vision due to the part of the retina that was detached, but otherwise fine.
