Google GPS Navigation...Nice Knowing you Garmin, TomTom, etc.

How cool does this look?

I really hope this comes to iPhones soon. Otherwise, I may be switching to a Google Android phone like the new Motorola Droid.

Me want.

I hope they port this to iPhone as well, though. While Android is definitely gaining momentum it's not quite iPhone 3.0 software yet. At least, IMO.

That said, Google Voice integration + Navigation = definite competition.

I searched for it on my G1 and I'm not seeing it. Maybe it'll be a system upgrade thing.

I have an iPhone and a Garmin both and the iPhone GPS antenna in no way compares to a dedicated GPS device. It's not as accurate, is slow to find you, and sometimes the position is off by 50-100 yards or so.

Yeah, when I'm standing under tree cover on a cloudy day 5 miles away from the truck and sunset is approaching I'm certainly not breaking out Google Android Phone if I have a choice in the matter.

Gotta go with the dedicated, shock resistant and water proof dedicated GPS system with an antenna made for those conditions. Neat toy for the city but not when it's the difference between a night in the woods and making it to a road before sunset.

TomTom is coming out with a windshield mounted cradle with a dedicated GPS chip that negates the phone's built-in GPS chip. I'm sure it's just the first of many we'll be seeing down the road for apps like this one from Google.

Exactly. If anything, this doesn't spell the end of dedicated GPS it just means the software and hardware are parting ways.

Zep,

May I ask why you are getting an 800w - instead of a Palm Pre or Treo Pro (if you have to stick with windows)

The 800w had a short shelf life and was known to be quite buggy.

May I suggest the Palm Pre ;-)

That sounds excellent.

Believe me, I'm all about convergence. I'd love to be able to toss the Garmin and have good GPS on my person at all times through my cell phone, I just haven't seen it yet.
A Cradle with superior GPS and antenna would go a long way though as I mostly just need the good GPS in the car.

Funny situation just happened: I had to go to Fall Creek Circle in Belton Missouri to pick up some banquet equipment at a residence. The address was not on my Magellan. I updated the GPS in August for 50.00.

The neighborhood is less than a year old. I plugged in googlemaps and it located the residence immediately. And it was spot on with accuracy the entire trip.

This. That is my biggest gripe. Annual updates are big ole ripoff. And they expect you to pay another chunk of change for a traffic antenna as well as a subscription for real time traffic data. Plus, my older Garmin doesn't give satellite views. I saw my friend's iPhone do that and I was amazed. Very cool.

I have the Android OS on my G1, so can't wait for this.

My bigger question is: where do I get one of those "I am here" T-shirts that he had on. My inner nerd wants one of those.

Why even try to port it to the iphone, doesn't it already have this functionality and therefore risk it being blocked by apple?
