Anyone know anything about College Station/Bryan TX.?

Anyone ever lived or live there... visited... have family there or nearby?

How about Galveston?

My daughter wants to go to college at Texas A&M because they are the top rated school for her field of interest and part of my research is simply asking around... and since I know no one there or who has been there I thought I'd try here. And as hard as it may be to believe she wants me to move there with her... or near her I should say. I can research my own career choices myself and have been... just looking for a general or even specific opinion of the area.

Any serious input is appreciated. Telling me it's the anti-freeze capital of the world is fine too although not as helpful.

Thanks in advance.

College Station/Bryan is a nice little college community in SE Texas about an hour NW of Houston proper. Amenities are numerous and it's a short drive to Austin/Hill Country or to the Gulf if that's your thing. Galveston is an overpriced armpit in a poor excuse for a gulf city. You'll battle Houston traffic if you plan to visit your daughter or she, you.

If it were my life, I'd live and work in Bryan. Houston is an overpopulated cesspool. I lived there a decade. Thought I missed it until I went back. Can't believe I spent 10 years of my life toiling there.

Thanks. She wants to go into marine biology and I believe Texas A&M does their hard core course work and hands on stuff there... but the main campus in College Station would be her first stop. Being that NOAA is in Galveston that would be a great potential intern or work place for her eventually... although she's convinced after college she's moving to Austraila to work on the Great Barrier Reef... and bring me with her there too... heh we'll see.

That's more information than you needed I realize but oh well.

I see that College Station/Bryan has a population of about 203k so it seems like the size would be to my liking. Have little to no interest in Houston.

They aren't the anti-freeze capital of the world but they build one hell of a bonfire, so i've heard.

ok now I have to know what field of interest that A&M is #1 in.. as far as I know they are ranked #1 in Petroleum Engineering and in Agriculture

Either way, I would recommend you move to Austin... that way you are only 2 hours away ... not too close, not too far.

OK I appreciate it. Her mother is a high school teacher and did some research as well as getting some help from the leader of a college prep program she's in... they came up with TA&M as the top school but certainly not the only one. Florida is a possibility too.

So you say College Station is a shithole... Phobia said it along with Bryan are nice... hmm. What makes it a shithole persay? What is it about Galveston that is so bad? I do know a guy who has family there and he loves it. Different perspectives.

OK here are the problems with all three places...

ALL of them have ZERO to offer. No significant culture, no nice geography (Galveston has awful beaches) and the people suck. Houston has awful crime, and is just an overall awful cesspool.

Of the three, College Station/Bryan is the best choice by far and it's pretty worthless UNLESS you are in school there. It's a typical college town that caters to the college crowd... Oh and it's full of rednecks.

I CAN NOT stress enough that none of those places has anything to offer. Life's too short to live in awful cities full of awful people.

at that moment I was a marine biologist!

The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to
return soup at a deli!

I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast
appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a
foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big bellow. I said,
"Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized
something was obstructing his breathing. From where I was standing
I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!

Mammal.

Whatever.

Then from out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a cork and I found myself on top of him face to face with the blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and pulled out the obstruction!

What is that a Titleist? A hole in one eh.

I just graduated from there in December. Let me know if you have any more specific questions about the college/area.

The people are generally friendly and welcoming but the most interesting thing you're going to get is tailgating at the football games. Otherwise, it's a typical small college town.
