I'm curious if your traditional touchpads on laptops work well with Windows 8.... Do you get similar functionality with the touchpads as you would if you weren't using a touch screen?

Windows 8 is supposed to be capatible with touchscreen devices and traditional desktops and laptops as well.

I'm wondering if you can use gestures (or whatever they are called) on a touchpad like you could on a touchscreen/tablet device.

I will be getting a touchscreen laptop with Win8 next year for sure. Best of both worlds (laptop/tablet)...

I have been using Windows 8 for a few months now - if you have Windows 7 on a laptop or desktop, don't bother.
Once you strip away the metro UI (which really isn't that cool) there is virtually no difference between 7 and 8.

Since I purchased my new laptop recently, I get Win8 for $15. Don't know if I will install it or not.

It's a little faster in startup and shutdown times. But not so much in general usage like opening apps, copying, and such. I don't really think it's enough to justify the upgrade at the moment.

Booting took about 1/3 longer on Windows 8 once all startup and login screens had been removed. That's one of the first things I tested.

Really? I didn't see a performance improvement at all, especially with non- MS apps. For example, running Chromium browser would drop out of metro to the traditional desktop and THEN start. It was way slower than running it in Win 7.

I should also mention that while Windows 8 doesn't currently use the same software delivery architecture that XBox and mobile do, the potential is absolutely there. The CEO of Valve was concerned enough about it that he came out publicly against it.
If you are a gamer, I would at least think carefully before upgrading.
