Canadian police: 2 arrested in al Qaeda-supported terror plot

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/22/world/...ted/index.html

(CNN) -- Canadian authorities have arrested two men accused of plotting to attack a passenger train in an al Qaeda-supported plot, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Monday.

Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto, are accused of conspiring to murder people on a VIA Canadian railway train, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. While the suspects had the capacity to carry out an attack, the public was never in imminent danger, police told reporters.

Police said the suspects "were receiving support from al Qaeda elements in Iran."

The support entailed direction and guidance, police said.

The suspects, who are not Canadian citizens, are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Tuesday, police said.

They are charged with conspiring to carry out an attack against, and conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group, police said in a statement.

News of the arrests came the same day Canada's parliament debated an anti-terrorism bill.

An official with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told CNN that there is no link between the Canadian investigation and the Boston bomb attack, and added there was no known link with the Canadians involved in the terror attack on the Algerian gas plant in January.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation quoted "highly placed sources" as saying the suspects were under surveillance for more than a year.

The CBC reported that the investigation was "part of a cross-border operation involving Canadian law enforcement agencies, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."

Canada has their military on Muslim lands too. Afghanistan and Libya are two I know of. They are part of the British Commonwealth...a former dead superpower due to being over extended in the world.

Irrelevant since we don't—not yet.

Updated:

(CNN) -- Canadian authorities have arrested two men accused of planning to carry out an al Qaeda-supported attack against a passenger train traveling between Canada and the United States, a U.S. congressman told CNN on Monday.

"As I understand it, it was a train going from Canada to the U.S.," Rep. Peter King, R-New York, chairman of the counterterrorism and intelligence subcommittee, said.

The news follows an announcement earlier in the day by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that they had arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35.

The two men are charged with "receiving support from al Qaeda elements in Iran" to carry out an attack and conspiring to murder people on a VIA railway train in the greater Toronto area, Assistant Police Commissioner James Malizia said.

"When I speak about supported, I mean direction and guidance," he said.

Despite the allegation of links to al Qaeda in Iran, there was no evidence to suggest the planned attacks were state-sponsored, Malizia said.

Neither the Canadian authorities nor King, R-New York, identified the exact route of the targeted train.

Authorities said the suspects were not Canadian citizens, but declined to identify their nationality or how long they had been in Canada.

There was no link between the Canadian investigation and the Boston Marathon bomb attack, an official with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told CNN on condition of anonymity.

Canadian authorities were tight-lipped about the planned time frame of the alleged attack except to say it was in the planning stage and not imminent.

"We are alleging these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to conduct a terrorist attack," Police Capt. Jennifer Strackan told reporters.

"They watched trains and railways in the greater Toronto area."

The alleged attack included a plan to derail a passenger train, she said.

Essenghaier, of Montreal, and Jaser, of Toronto, will make their first court appearance on Tuesday, police said.

News of the arrests came the same day Canada's parliament debated an anti-terrorism bill.

I will tell you what I don't want you to do when it comes to me.

Anyhow, we're all still less likely to die from a terror incident than slipping in the tub or being in a car accident.
