McDonald's helps workers get food stamps.

McDonald's helps workers get food stamps

Quote:
Nancy Salgado, who has worked at a Chicago McDonald's for 10 years and makes $8.25 an hour, asked the McResource representative a number of questions related to getting assistance to pay for her heating bill, her groceries and her sister's medical expenses. Salgado told the representative that she was recording the call for her sister.

The helpline operator never asked Salgado how much she made per hour, and how many hours per week she worked beyond the fact that she was a full-time employee. But she said that Salgado "definitely should be able to qualify for both food stamps and heating assistance."

The representative then pointed her toward a number of resources in Chicago, such as food pantries and a program that would help cover some of her heating bill. She said she would email her specific phone numbers and programs.

The operator also explained that the McResource line is available to help McDonald's workers who need help navigating the process of getting public assistance. The helpline's phone number is posted in fliers at many McDonald's locations.
Nice of McDonalds to help get its employees on the gov't teet.

If our lawmakers allow businesses to pay less than a living wage, and based on income these employees qualify....I guess I don't understand the real problem here.

Unless you want to make an argument for raising the bar for qualifying for food stamps? Which is fine; but don't do so under the guise of this is somehow a terrible thing for McDonald's to be doing...you should just debate the food stamp program on its own merits.

So it's on the government for ALLOWING it, but not McDonalds for doing it because they can have tax payers subsidize the employee wages? This is corporate welfare as much as welfare for the poor. Welfare for EVERYONE?

Goddamn that is some backward ass thinking.

The government is a social institution with built in "welfare" systems. A company is a private or public enterprise with the sole purpose of creating a profit. The company isn't being subsidized. The workers are by socialist laws. Those laws aren't necessarily "evil" or "wrong." We live in a society and we are going to have some "socialist" laws. To pretend that the company is subsidized by giving citizens money and non cash aid is silly and naive.

No, the company is being subsidized, because the citizens receiving the money are working for them, and instead of earning a wage that allows them to participate in society, they aren't, and the government is making up the rest.

The government should not have to support fulltime working Americans.

When the did the become acceptable?

I'll ask you again, if historic data shows the minimum wage use to support a working family with two kids, why shouldn't that be the case today?

Why shouldn't the minimum wage keep pace with inflation?

IF a company is making a profit off the labor of that worker, why shouldn't that labor earn the worker a wage that allows them to feed themselves without food stamps?

Privatize the profits, socialize the losses - the mission statement of corrupt corporate fascists selling crony capitalism.

No that's twisting what the word subsidy means. Those workers are being subsidized. They're not improving themselves to get higher pay. That's NOT MCDonald's fault whatsoever. The jobs there pay what they pay because anyone can do that kind of work. It's not high skilled labor. So there's no scarcity of workers for those jobs. Once again, your command of supply and demand is lacking.

Furthermore, the govt does NOT have to subsidize them either. This wasn't the case in the past.

You probably think the govt allowing people to keep their own money via a tax credit is a subsidy too.

Wait wut? Is that really you listo?

Government is a social institution with built in "welfare" systems?

That wasn't true of our govt --at least not before the socialist/progressive era. Then it went off the rails. I hardly think of govt as a social institution as well. Maybe it is. I just don't seen what is essentially a coercive institution has being anything "social" though. Social problems are not supposed to be solved by our federal govt. It's job was to protect natural rights. That all got lost along the way, particularly during the progressive era.

Raise Minimum wage = Poor people get hit hard due to raised food prices

Leave It Alone = Upper Middle Class and Above pay for the poor through government programs

Which one is better?
