KC Star expects Commings to play FS
The Kansas City Star expects CB Sanders Commings to compete for the Chiefs' starting free safety job in 2014.

With Kendrick Lewis a free agent this offseason, Commings is expected to be moved to safety opposite Eric Berry. A fifth-round pick, he spent the majority of his rookie year on short-term I.R., finishing with just three defensive snaps. The Chiefs run a lot of single-high safety looks under DC Bob Sutton, so Commings could be a strong fit as a former cornerback. Kansas City also figures to bring in competition through the draft or free agency.

I believe in Commings' talent.

But you use your shoulder near-constantly at safety.

We should head into this offseason treating him as quality depth, and provide even more depth behind him.

We need five safeties heading into this offseason.

Right now, we have two: Berry and Commings. With Ron Parker, who's really more of a corner.

Bring back Abdullah if at all possible. Draft two more safeties. See if you can land MacDougald back from the Bucs.

Ron Parker impressed me with the snaps he got at CB.

I'm not suggesting we put him into the starting lineup or anything based on his ability to come in on corner blitzes and play special teams, but I think it's time to start looking to people like him instead of Dunta when we need fill-ins for nickel and dime packages.

At any rate, we could definitely use him at CB if we're not going to overhaul that position.

He's 26 years old. Has been around the NFL a few years, though. Bouncing from practice squad to practice squad.

I'd like to see us use him the way the Packers use Jarrett Bush.

This is, of course, contingent on who we bring in and let go in free agency. There's always room for someone like Ron Parker to get the axe if the talent is there.

Dunta was a huge uh uh. I was actually excited about his signing as a fill in.

Personally, I thought Marcus Cooper did well. he was a rookie and will grow and did so with no NO NO help over the top at all ever.

Also, I think Andy will keep Smith in as the starting QB. I don't think he'll make a change.

Commings/Kelce/Nico kind of come in next year as another draft class...guys who barely played due to injury but have been around for a year and had a chance to get a taste for what is needed.

In Commings' case, I would expect that while the Chiefs hope he emerges as a starting safety, that they'll probably draft another guy and possibly dip into the market to find another.
