What's with "Half the distance to the goal?"
Why are penalties half the distance to the goal if you are within the penalty yards?

If you're at the 10 and you get called for holding, its a 10 yard penalty. Your offense should move back to the 1.

Because logic, and chances for safeties are awesome.

I've never really understood it either. If you are on the 20 yard line and take a personal foul, it sure seems to me like the ball should be placed on the 5 yard line, but it's placed on the 10 instead.

I tend to agree that they should just enforce it with no "half the distance" and just put it on the 1 yard line if the penalty would take it beyond the end zone. But I don't think that one's changing any time soon.
