Mock (4/25)
My best guess as to how the Chiefs actually draft in a couple days.
Assumptions: 1. GM John Dorsey and HC Andy Reid are extended for four years. Alex Smith is kept on for at least another year. 2. The Chiefs decline OLB Dee Ford's fifth year contract option. 3. The Chiefs extend CB Terrance Mitchell over the course of the 2017 season. 3. The Chiefs sign: 1.27. OLB Takkarist McKinley, UCLA Yeah. Not what I want the Chiefs to do. But in my opinion, seems the most likely. I want them to trade up for Watson, but that's not Dorsey's game, is it? He builds for the long-term, to make the team as good as he can across the board for as long as he can. The best way to do that is to not trade away a ton of picks in a talent-rich draft. I also want him to select Mahomes if they stay put, but Mahomes isn't a great fit for the Andy Reid system, and as much as I like him, the Red Raider offensive system does spook me some. There are some pretty good talents across the board here, but unfortunately they're not at DL or ILB, where the Chiefs could use the most help. Instead, they'll settle for a really good OLB in McKinley. The Chiefs are cash-strapped heading into 2018 and Ford hasn't given us a consistently good passrush. He's upgraded from non-factor to bursts of production. Hopefully he can translate that into more consistency. McKinley is the insurance if he doesn't. (I predict McKinley is our starting LOLB in 2018.) 2.59. QB Nathan Peterman, Pittsburgh The more and more I watch this guy, the more I think the Chiefs love this guy. He seems to fit the Alex Smith mold, though he is more comfortable pushing the ball downfield. This is a minor reach for Peterman, who I think is more of a 3rd round talent, but the Chiefs need a QB desperately to groom and this doesn't preclude them from going early again on a QB in 2018 if they want. 3.97. NT Jaleel Johnson, Iowa Chiefs need to add more beef up front. Right now they have solid depth options at both DE positions -- Nunez-Roches and Jenkins have both proven themselves in limited starting time. But they still have no depth behind Logan at NT, after losing their best two NTs from 2016, in Howard and Poe. 3.104. ILB Anthony Walker Jr., Northwestern Gotta build that front seven, folks. I like Walker as a prospect a lot more than I like his tape. He sports very good potential in pass coverage and in run support, though his tape has lapses all over the place in both. I think he has outstanding instincts, and seems to have plus-athleticism for the position. I think where he lacks is his fundamentals, and this coaching staff can make strides on that front with him. 4.132. DE Eddie Vanderdoes, UCLA This seems like a Dorsey player -- tons and tons and tons of athleticism. It is ridiculous, the tools this guy has to work with. With Britt Reid coaching up DL, there's no reason why they can't nab a potential starting DL in the midrounds. 5.170. TE George Kittle, Iowa The Chiefs love TEs that can catch the ball in the flat, turn the corner and burst upfield. The Chiefs also need to be deeper at the TE position than they are -- as often as they play 3TEs, they need to be at least four deep. 5.180. RB De'Angelo Henderson, Coastal Carolina You guys gotta get a load of this dude, if you haven't already. This is an extremely slippery running back who boasts great short-distance burst and defenders never seem to land a clean hit on. I think he could be an outstanding receiver out of the backfield, and provide a great 10 snaps a game in relief. I really want to see what this coaching staff can get out of this guy. 6.216. RB Joe Williams, Utah I really loved what this guy brought as a player since the Combine. He looked outstanding in the drills which brought me to his tape. Williams is such a smart, reliable playmaker that I think it makes sense for the Chiefs to double-dip here and fatten up their RB stable a bit. 6.218. ILB Dylan Cole, Missouri State Sticking with the local kid -- I really do think he could be an interesting reserve option going forward. He clearly has an uphill battle to make the roster, however. 7.245. OT Taylor Gadbois, Southeastern Louisiana Dorsey almost always picks an obscure dude here, so I'll just select someone I like that I don't think will get drafted. Gadbois would certainly be a practice squad candidate. |

In accordance with the rules/restrictions of the new Mod team, I believe I'm allowed to hope that your draft gets raped by a 400 lb man.

With the exception of double-dipping on RBs, this is very much in-line with my thoughts if KC stands pat at 27.

Absolutely fantastic! No offense Direkshun, but your pre-draft predictions have not come close, so we aren't taking Peterman.

Are his mock drafts ever right? If not, I love it. We'll pick up Ford's option and draft a QB in the first. Please no Peterman. He has no arm strength

I mocked a ton in 2016 but I didn't follow the draft too intently that year. I didn't even have an "official endorsement" -- which, you know, who gives a shit, but it's just an indication that I was checked out last draft season. I'm off a ton as much as any fan is, though. By no means do I think I'm Nostradamus, but I do think I have a little idea as to what Dorsey/Reid are looking for after following them in the draft way too intently since 2013... |
