Chiefs Best draft picks by Round - Round 5

Okay, we're moving up the draft list. Today we examine the top 5th-round picks in Chiefs history. Here's my list

1. Jerry Mays, 1961 - Jerry's not an AFL ringer, because he was a 5th round AFL pick and an 11th round NFL pick. He was a fixture in the Chiefs' first decade, playing for 10 seasons with 7 AFL pro bowl selections 2 AFL all-pro selections. He was drafted by the Vikings in the NFL draft, so if he hadn't chosen the Chiefs, I shudder to think how Super Bowl IV could have changed.

2. Dante Hall, 2000 - What is there to say? The human joystick. Seven years with the Chiefs, two pro bowls, an all-pro, and 11 return touchdowns. He's a lesson in how good a returner can be when you put Gary Stills and Derrick Blaylock in front of him.

3. Carlos Carson, 1980 - Carlos was with the Chiefs for 10.5 years, making two pro bowls. His best season was a pretty astounding 80 catches for 1,351 yards, and he's going to be installed in the Chiefs' ring of honor in 2017.

4. Tyreek Hill, 2016 - One season with the Chiefs so far, but with a pro bowl and an all-pro selection in that time. 12 touchdowns, fastest man in the NFL, and while he's only got one season of service, who below him on the list had a better Chiefs career?

5. Brandon Carr, 2008 - Four-year starter for the Chiefs, including his rookie year, and was able to leverage a strong resume with the Chiefs to get his dream job with his favorite team.

6. Scott Fujita, 2002 - This noted bounty hunter was only with the Chiefs for three years, but started for 2.5 of them and was one of the defense's stronger players, though that was a really low bar in the 2002-2004 time frame.

7. Derrick Graham, 1990 - Five years with the Chiefs, two as a starter. He could never quite live up to the Szott-Grunhard-Shield group he played with, but he started on some good teams.

8. Joe Horn, 1996 - He thrived once he moved into Willie Roaf's old house in New Orleans, but in KC he played for four years and wasn't a starter because Marty saw more upside in Kevin Lockett. But, hey, the fans recognized his ability.

9. Eric Holle, 1984 - Four years as a serviceable nose tackle backup. That'll get you on the list.

10. D.J. Alexander, 2015 - Only two years with the team, but has a pro bowl on his resume as a special teams ace. Still has growth potential from here.

Others who were considered include Charles Mincy, Derrick Blaylock, Pat Dennis, Jordan Black just to annoy people, Kendrick Lewis because I'm required to and it makes me mad that I had to think about him, Jim Arnold, Jimbo Elrod, Kolby Smith, and just for fun, Boomer Grigsby. I briefly pondered Sanders Commings, but he got hurt as soon as I thought about him and is no longer eligible.

It was between Hall and Hill for me. I picked Hall, primarily because we've only experienced 1 year of Hill.

Carlos Carson.

If Hill has the same career as a receiver as Carson did, then Hill will be the pick.

But one year in is just too difficult to predict.

I think Dante Hall was the much more dynamic playmaker, even if Carson was here during the dark days of the Kansas City Chiefs. IIRC, Dante even had an All-Pro season.

Not hating on Carlos Carson in the least, I'm just going with Dante.

Carlos played with Bill Kenney and Todd Blackledge.

1983: 80 catches, 1,351 yards, 16.9 yp, 7 TD's. Long 50
1984: 57 catches, 1,078 yards, 18.9 ypc, 4 TD's, Long 57
1985: 47 catches, 843 yards, 17.9 ypc, 4 TD's, Long 37 (14 games started)
1986: 21 catches, 497 yards, 23.7 ypc, 4 TD's, Long 70 (7 starts)
1987: 55 catches, 1,044 yards, 19 ypc, 7 TD's, Long 70
1988: 45 catches, 711 yards, 15.5 ypc, 3 TD's, Long 81

Can you even imagine this guy today? He had the Raiders secondary MUGGING him (because it was legal but they were GOOD).

He played with Bill Kenney and Blackledge.

Can you imagine him with Alex Smith or hell, Trent Green?

He makes Bowe and Maclin look like #3's.

I was there when Dante Hall returned his infamous punt return against the Broncos giving us the win in the fourth quarter I voted him

I was also there when not just Priest Holmes but also Derrick Blaylock both scored 4 rushing touchdowns each giving the Chiefs a 56-10 dog beat down of the Atlanta Falcons with Mike Vick at quarterback. Also to note that Derrick Blaylock was responsible for leading some of Dante Hall kick returns with his blocking. I would have liked to vote for him if he stuck longer for the Chiefs.

He's probably the best ever example of the difference that coaching can make. He was small and slow until Dick Vermeil showed up with his special teams coach...can't remember the name. Then all of a sudden he was a great return man.
