Eagles are again attempting to get a 4th and long conversion option on kick offs

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelph...te-onside-kick

"The onside kick proposal is very similar to one the Eagles proposed a couple years ago before it was tabled. It would basically offer an alternative to a traditional onside kick. Teams would face a 4th-and-20 from their own 20 yard line with a chance to convert and keep the ball.

Here are a few key points about the proposal:

• A team may elect to go for this 4th-and-20 just twice per game and must be trailing its opponent to attempt. They must notify the referee of their attempt and the ref will notify the other team.

• If the offense converts, it’s a first down and normal rules apply. If the defense gets a stop, they get the ball at the spot.

• If a team commits a penalty on its first try, it would not be able to change its mind and opt for a traditional kickoff.

• Teams will still have the option of going for a traditional onside kick.

The reason the Eagles gave for this proposal was “competitive equity and fan engagement.”

Big no from me. Not just because the whole idea sucks but I can just imagine Spags inevitably opting for a blitz every time so we **** it up and give them back the ball. I know we have the best 3rd/4th and long offense but **** allowing other teams the chance to beat us because we can't get the ball back.

That's stupid, although the rule changes that made onside kicks nearly impossible to convert a few years ago should be reverted IMO

They're never changing that back because it's a player safety rule.

I understand what you're saying and agree with you that it's most likely never coming back, but I hate hearing that it's a "player safety issue." Know what else is dangerous to player safety in football? Tackling.

Special teams/kickoffs are supposed to be part of the game and the current kickoff rules have taken away a significant part of the kickoff play. Why not just give the receiving team the ball at the 20 yard line after a touchdown or at the 35 after a field goal? That will really help with player safety.

If you lose to the Chiefs then you get to change the rules. That's the precedent.

No. We won some of our close games this year by getting the ball back and driving 75 yards in the final few minutes. With these rules we wouldn't be able to do it if the other team didn't give us back possession. It only really helps if you're down by 9+ with less than 5 mins on the clock and we haven't been in that position. It's a change which favours a team with a great offense and defense, hence the Eagles want it. When you are a team with an elite offense and average defense like us then it ain't so great.

I don't like it. I can't imagine that the success rate would be any better than the current inside kick. I do agree that the inside kick needs tweaking. Current rules make it nearly impossible to convert. But 4th and 20 isn't the answer.

As long as we're talking about potential rule changes, I read that the NFL competition committee has recommended changing the fair catch rule to any fair catch inside the 25 would e spotted at the 25, like in college. Screw that. That would take away a lot of field advantage. If a team can pin the other team inside the 5, they should be able to do so. A lot of balls would end up getting fair caught that otherwise would have been allowed to bounce. That's an exciting time of the game. Don't take it away.

I bet this was added solely because the Chiefs offense would be on the field for 60 minutes every game.

Honestly, pretty much my initial thought. Beach would quit spending ANY capital at all on the defense and simply field the greatest offense of all time; we literally wouldn't NEED to field a defense.

It works in the XFL.

In the NFL, we would see numerous ticky-tack illegal contact calls decide this rule.

I hate onside kickoffs. Most boring play in football. It’s got something like a 9% success rate. They really do need to change it bc it’s pretty meaningless.

Let the team attempting have 2 options.

1. 55 yard FG (other team decides which direction)
2. Down and 10 from their own 5 yard line. If they convert they would still have to go 85 yards to win with however much time is left.
