In response to my post asking what the cap hit would be to cut Dan Williams, as I was dreaming of Brad Culpepper(too late, I know), he responded:
"To Cory Thompson: Culpepper is with the Bears now, as you probably know. But, FYI, the Chiefs would still be responsible for about $1 million this year for Williams if they cut him now. They would be responsible for about $4 million against the cap next year. " OUCH BABE!! Too painful to absorb folks. He is here to stay, or until he renegs. Another piss poor season, and he damn well better! ------------------ ct the freedom of choice is truth the fear to choose is hypocricy</B> |

Cory: That is VERY bad news. I didn't think it was that high of a figure.......WOW! I think if I were gun I would follow him around like a shadow and make him earn his check. If he were to "get hurt" again, make him do something useful like grounds keeping and Dan, it's C-H-I-E-F-S!

That sounds odd to me. I thought that if a player was released the entire bonus was accelarated to that year, but if done after June 1st it was split over that year and the next. 1 million and 4 million definitely isn't an even split. I need to do some more reading on the salary cap.

Is there a different set of rules if a player simply walks away & not released? It doesn't seem fair to punish a team for something out of its control!

I don't remember the Lions suffering any catastrophe to their cap due to the Sanders situation. I don't think the team is penalized if a player walks away or else everybody would have done it to the Bengals.

Chiefnj - They are still paying for him, they never released him, or turned in the retirement papers, because they can't afford to without releasing tons of players.

If Dan Williams wants out of KC then he should redo his contract so that we can afford to release him.

G_Man,
I had always thought that a release after June 1st, held the cap hit that season to the bonus portion of that season. Then the remaining portion(s) of the bonus accelerated to the next season. So, Williams cap hit in 2000, if we were to release him before Sept. 3(new rule, vets receive entire season salary if on opening day roster) is $933K, and 2001 cap hit is remaining 4yrs bonus accelerated into one, painful $3.7M (4x933K) hit! Adam's tip seems to support this. I was REALLY hoping you were right here, and the cap hit is split between this year and next, roughly $2.4M in 2000 and 2001, each. Still painful, but not as drastic. ------------------ ct the freedom of choice is truth the fear to choose is hypocricy</B> |
