Royals notes: Greinke gets honor Pitcher's combined record was 15-4 with a 1.93 ERA By Robert Falkoff / MLB.com Get tickets CLEVELAND -- Highly touted Royals pitching prospect Zack Greinke has had another big honor come his way. The Sporting News has named Greinke as its Minor League Baseball Player of the Year in recognition of Greinke's outstanding season for Single-A Wilmington and Double-A Wichita. Greinke's combined numbers were 15-4 with a 1.93 earned run average. Greinke, who will turn 20 on Oct. 21, caught some national attention when he pitched a perfect inning in the MLB Future Stars Game. "Zack Greinke rarely faltered on the mound, even against more experienced hitters. . .," said Sporting News Radio host and minor league baseball insider Kevin Wheeler. The Royals fully realize what they have in Greinke and have been precise in their plans for him. While some clamored for the Royals to bring up Greinke in the second half of this season, the organization was adamant about not rushing Greinke into the Major Leagues. Kansas City officials expect the right-hander to compete for a job in the starting rotation when the Royals report to Surprise, Ariz., for 2004 Spring Training in February. Greinke, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, was the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year in '02. |
