Computer question

My wife plays some games at a site that uses a lot of animation and her computer sometimes freezes up.

Is there a game software she can download to improve her computer's performance?

Or is there another solution, short of buying a new computer, to this problem.

Well that could be a number of things. Some easily fixable.

It would really help if we knew what games, or from what website. We can determine what could go wrong from that. It could be that you need an updated version of flash player or java or something like that. Usually games that you play straight from a website are flash or java based, and are made so that they will run on older computers as well as new.

And what type of freeze up? Is it just the web browser program that freezes or is it all of Windows? Will the mouse cursor move? That would help too.

Has she ever been able to play games on it without it freezing up?

The site is Pogo.com and apparently it's Windows that freezes, because nothing moves, including the cursor.

It looks like those are java based games. It may be that java needs reinstalled or updated. I'd try that first. Go here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

And download and install the latest version of java. Then try the games again.

Does the computer freeze up at any time other than playing games from that site?

Also... pogo has known issues with Internet Explorer 8 and says it's not compatible. If you're using IE8, that could be the problem. The issues they mention don't include freezing the computer though.

If you are using IE8, I would suggest trying Firefox.

We've never used Firefox.

Is there a free download somewhere for that?

Firefox is an outstanding browser in general. Well worth giving it a try outside of solving this one issue.

I agree that Firefox is an okay browser but its not for the non-techy who just wants to click and go.

They don't want to deal with those pesky issues with websites that don't do their updates for Firefox in a timely manner. Now, thats not Firefox's fault, but its still an issue you have to deal with.

If you are technically challenged stay away from Firefox.

I think this is a bit of an exaggeration. My mother uses Firefox and she's very technically challenged. I've only run into one website where I've ever had a problem with Firefox (Bank of America's online banking). Just use Firefox and if you run into an issue on a website, you can always open up IE.

It is very rare that I have been to a site that doesn't work with firefox, and my Mom uses it just fine (which is actually really saying something). Heck, most of the sites where it would be an issue are intranet, not internet, and really, if it doesn't work with firefox it is probably a bad place to be.

Did you have problems getting Firefox installed? It's not as technical as it would seem. It will even import your bookmarks and settings from IE. The installation is painless, and the operation isn't much different than IE.

If you want some troubleshooting on that, just ask...
