Growing tobacco versus marijuana

The first retail marijuana places will open up on January 1st here in Denver. I think they're mostly moving into old Blockbuster and Kenny Rogers Roasters locations.

Anyway, the latest debate is production. They've got big warehouses now that are growing the stuff commercially, but apparently people can also grow their own, and the debate now is the limit (now set at 6 per person and 12 per household as of last night): http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_24...lants-no-front

It got me wondering, though. What's the advantage in growing it yourself? Is it just cheaper? And if it's cheaper, why don't people grow their own tobacco for cigarettes? You never hear about people growing their own tobacco.

You too! Don't be surprised if there are reports of a woman yelling for an otter in your neck of the woods. I have an aunt in silverton and a reason for traveling soon.

Well, that and it sounds like it may not be worth growing one's own in a legal environment.
Yes, I think you're spot on here.

Tobacco used to be a highly sought after crop that was tightly regulated. Don't know if you could grow your own unless you stole some seed or plants from the few allowed to grow it. The internet would have changed that I guess.

Also I think they have laws in place about grow location and amount due to cigarette taxes because you know there is a state stamp on a pack of smokes and uncle Sam wants his cut of money

I've known people that successfully grew pot. They had little intelligence and showed no aptitude for botanical care outside of the pot. You could throw seeds out of a window and stand a good chance of success. In other words, it's idiot proof. Tobacco probably is not.

good! more for us!! honestly though in the decades of smoking they've found cigarettes to be cancerous but why can't they say the same about smoking weed? I get that smoking anything is terrible for your lungs but people been smoking weed just as long as they been studying the effects of tobacco smoke yet nobody has claimed smoking weed causes lung cancer nor has it killed anyone who's smoked it.

Besides, I have a few friends who grow. One of them brought over a mason jar filled with medicinal grade stuff. I haven't bought any for months.
It is a commitment. But like someone said, it's a labor of love. An Indica, IIR, does take longer to harvest. Set up an indoor grow room, get the right lights specific to veg and flower. Start with seedlings and have 2 grows at once. One flowering while the other is vegging. Once the first grow goes to flower, start a new veg cycle with new seedlings, taken from your best plant that is now in the flowering chamber. Repeat.
