No, it's not good managing. It's terrible managing.

Because on this particular night we know for sure that Shields has it, and we don't know if Davis does. Many games have been lost because the manager made one too many pitching changes when he didn't need to.

You are ignoring the fact that we possess one additional key piece of information that the stats are not telling you. In addition to the stats, we also know for sure that Shields has it tonight.

It's not a horrible move. It's not even a bad move.

but, STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, it's the WRONG move.

Wrong EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

When you have Wade Davis and you pitch him in 8th innings. There is NO REASON AT ALL to bring a guy out who has thrown 93 pitches who is going to face a guy who has hit a HR off of him in the game already.

It worked. It'll usually work.
