I'm actively looking to purchase a used vehicle for my son to drive, and was curious about the worth and cost of a warranty for it. Suggestions, particularly if there's a reputable outfit out there, would be welcomed. Thanks!

On average, your best option for any kind of car warranty you have to pay for is to say no. It might be worth it if you get unlucky on a major repair, but chances are you won't ever use it.

The vehicle that I'm considering has about a 1 to 5% chance of catastrophic engine failure, and a new motor is about $17,000. That's the only reason I'm even considering it.

Depends on the make you're looking at, Ford mo co has been decent for me in the past.

17,000 sounds high for an engine...

and they always try to find a reason to not cover anything/everything...

hell they sold a guy a warranty and 6 months later when the 5.4 3 valve blew they told him the previous owner had the same warranty and complained of an engine tick no one could figure out so they werent covering it due to pre-existing conditions, but they didnt tell him that when taking his money for a full warranty...

My luck is, if I buy the warranty everything will run super smooth, just will need routine maintenance and other things not covered by a warranty. If I do not add the warranty I will have a least 1 major $$$ repair (usually several) that would have been covered. Also you have to pay attention to the mileage more than the time they put on the warranty. The contract might only average 500 miles or so per month before the warranty expires, so you might go in 2 1/2 years later on w 4 year warranty to find out it has been expired due to mileage.

Consider the warranty. Whatever they have asked you to pay, negotiate it. Warranties have a cost provided to the dealer by the warranty company, they mark that up and sell it to you at profit. Sometimes its almost double the cost.

Warranties are great peace of mind, and if you can negotiate it down, then unless you dont ever use it, you will likely get your moneys worth. Trust me, if you have it, you will find stuff to use it on in a used car.

edit: PORSCHE?

Get the warranty. Better yet, dont buy a POS porsche. You will thank me when your not paying 400 bucks for an oil change.
