VARSITY
Used Car Warranties

I'm actively looking to purchase a used vehicle for my son to drive, and was curious about the worth and cost of a warranty for it. Suggestions, particularly if there's a reputable outfit out there, would be welcomed. Thanks!

Never buy a inexpensive car that was expensive when it was new.

Generally solid advice.

But, im not going to lecture Donger on what to buy. He wants to get a cool little sports roadster for his son. And the Boxster is basically just an entry level Porsche.

If i were his son, i'd be like "**** YEAH".

Reminds me of the Mazda RX-8's. I love everything about that car in terms of looks, road feel, interior.....freakin' suicide doors on a sports car....

......and then you look at the reliability reports and cost to fix and realize why such a cool little car can be bought for less than $10K.

Mercedes C-class is another one that sticks out in my head.....

BMW 3 Series too.....

Get him one of those sporty little Fiats. Those things are pretty cool and not too expensive.

yep. most warranties are garbage. And the language is basically a book of stuff they won't cover.

like if your motor blows up because of some random gasket leak (or something ridiculous), they would pay for the gasket, but not the motor. lol. shit like that.

Car warranty is never worth it. When do you ever hear about car engine failures on vehicles less than 10 years old? Other than poorly made American cars..

.

Nissan has had major engine problems in fairly new vehicles. I can think of that in less than two seconds.

They all have issues

Dumb.

American ENGINES are some of the best engines out there. The knock on American cars is not their drive train, it's their fit and finish.

I've heard nothing but bad things about used car warranties. Pretty much what's already been said here.

My personal rule of thumb has been "be your own insurance". Take the money you would spend to them and put it away to yourself in some form of savings/investment instrument just like they would. If they're willing to bet you won't need it then you should too. They have done alot of research to know exactly the break even point so they can make money off of you and paying that to yourself is using their research for free. And it's there if you do need it.

No. He'll wreck it before any engine issue. Never buy more than a beater for a kid, it's gonna get wrecked.
