"Is Having Alex Smith the Worst Purgatory in Football?"--Dan LeBatard

He mentioned it a few times on his radio show today. The quotes in reference is from the top of the second hour. in full:

"What is the worst purgatory in football? Is it Alex Smith, where you're going to be OK, and hugely boring, and never win anything, or is it the whole Philip Rivers situation of always being down late and having to go the whole length of the field?"

"It's not Hell; it's Purgatory. You're OK, but you're not good enough and you're not going to be good enough."

"You're not going to do any sort of meaningful winning with Alex Smith as your QB. Nothing."

"It's hard to watch when you watch what they were playing against and he's, 'all I wanna do is not turn the ball over, all I wanna do is it's 3rd and 9 and I'll throw it three yards, or I'll take a sack.'"

"You'll get to the playoffs, and you'll lose."

Half the shit Reid calls are designed quick hitting short passes.

So we have to figure one of two things.

1. Alex can't make the deeper throws and multi-reads.. so his coach is masking his flaws.
( could anyone really believe a HC would pay and play a QB like this?)

2. Andy once again sees a bottom tier OL, and feels he has to get the ball out quick or they are screwed.

This yr, it also feels clear that Reid is terrified of Alex getting hurt. (both in quick pass calls no matter what... AND that Smith is no longer using his legs much)

Alex Smith is not a special QB that can carry a brokedicked or group of screwups. Few teams have one.

Be honest, everyone.. this team has been loaded with people screwing up way too much so far.. everyone including Smith. It's as if they huddle up and ask, "okay, which of us will royally fail our assignment this play?"

... but people here are like children. I can't tell if you all just love the drama? or if you are really panicked and miserable like this IRL. It's a pathetic display of fans on a team that has more wins in 4 games this yr than they had in 6 games last yr.

Smith has not been good.. but once again, when the whole team is loaded with fail... why do fans expect this mythical, epic QB to come in and carry them? It's rare... RARE... and it's not Alex ****ing Smith.
Jfc. This team is loaded with fail? This is the most talented offensive team we've had by a mile since Alex has been here. Alex is for the first time in a while being asked to win games in the 20s. If you're completely incapable of doing that, you won't win consistently in the nfl. A qb shouldn't be this reliant on a defense to give up less than 20 and force 2 or 3 turnovers a game to win.

Instead of making excuses, let's point to a simple idea. All we need from Alex Smith is to start scoring 20+ points often. Even without defensive turnovers. Alex isn't carrying a brokedick team. For once he doesn't have a defense carrying him. That's the difference.

Same old story. If Alex sucks dick, it's because the roster suddenly went to shit or contracted AIDS.

Magically, of course.

That's just focusing on the offensive side. I'm giving the defense a pass on most of their issues. No Justin Houston, and young or crappy secondary... we knew this would be a problem.. and often, they have done well enough.

Try and get it through.. Alex is just part of the problem. He's just the only part anyone here wants to focus so much rage and blame on.

Been said a million times.. even by people that were open-minded of him...

HE CAN'T SAVE A TEAM WITH THIS MANY PEOPLE SCREWING UP.

If that makes him limited and not worth keeping, hey, that's fine. But until all of those other team issues get cleaned up some, there are only a few QBs around that can succeed with the current mess... and we can't have them.

ah, cut the shit... passes are hitting guys in the hands.

sure, he's had some wild ass misses, but most would agree those are typical of all QBs.

Now be relieved. I'm done with this for the week. Smith's not really been worth defending, and I said all that needs saying.

Continue to cry, argue amongst yourselves.. and act befuddled at why the GM/HC are keeping Smith on the field. The answer to that is, they see what I see, and are in agreement.

I haven't watched a single down of Chiefs football since midseason last year because I came to that realization and I just couldn't bring myself to care about a franchise that doesnt care about the playoffs, let alone a SB.

Alex Smith is like taking a stock Honda Civic to a drag race.

sure, you're going to beat some of the other 4 bangers here and there, and even occassionally beat a Corvette when his car breaks down at the line and can't run.

but you're never going to consistently win races. you'll still have the same 18second 1/4 mile car that requires 100 things to go right in order to even hope to win.

Remember when Cassel got jammed down our throats over and over? This could get worse considering the amount of offensive talent that will get wasted.

I really hope that's not true. If Dorsey and Andy start him week after week no matter how he plays then we as fans are hosed. That means they don't care about their product at all.

The problem is that we took a step back on defense so we can invest in offense. Over the years we brought in Maclin, Schwartz, and signed fisher and Kelce to mega contracts. And yet, the offense has looked really, really bad this year.

I expected out defense to take a step back after losing Sean Smith, Abdullah, Houston, and then Gaines... And nobody really new to replace these guys. I didn't expect our offense to. What's their excuse? Who are the big players they're missing, other than Charles, who wasn't even here late last year?
