Please define "sustainable"

I guess I don't know what sustainable means anymore because I read it and hear it all the time that what we do is not sustainable?

If we win 20 out of 24 games, how is the formula of mitigating mistakes, forcing turnovers and being super efficient in red zone defense not sustainable?

We are 3-0 against the Raiders and 3-0 vs the Chargers in that stretch. We are 2-0 vs the broncos with this formula...

our losses @ Patriots, @ Texans when they had JJ watt, @ Pitt, and at home vs the Bucs. All division leaders (or tied) and playoff teams. We are built to win the division and make a playoff push with this formula...

It works.

One thing to consider is that when D or ST scores, the O is not given the opportunity to make that score themselves, resulting in decreased stats for the O. There is no way of knowing the difference, if any, it had on the wins/loss of games. Of course I think its huge when it happens but I don't dis the O because of it.

All I've wanted is to see Alex/Andy play offense with some balls and be willing to go beat a team. They showed they could do it against the Falcons and it worked.

Better hope they don't go back to the horizontal dink and dunk shit, because they are finally starting to become a team and not just a lucky defense.

Agree. It's also really weird how people make these assumptions like "if berry doesn't make those 2 picks the Chiefs lose". What? How could you possibly know that? Same with the fake punt. So if we just go for it normally with a run up the middle and get 2 yards for a first then we automatically couldn't score a TD or a FG because...? And none of the time we would take off on the hypothetical drive has any impact on the game? Why can't we do the reverse and say if smith isn't stripped sacked then the Falcons never score on that drive and the Chiefs don't even need berry's pick 2? Even some "lucky" plays we have had this year might not have mattered. Are we a wildly different team if we just beat the Panthers in overtime which was where it was headed and Smith leads a FG drive with 4 minutes left to beat the Falcons?

Welcome to the reason sports discussion is so fun/annoying (depending on your preference). It's easy to argue your case when you make assumptions about what might have happened.

Yes. If you need the other team to make mistakes to win, then you aren't likely to get that from the Patriots, it's true.

But if you're the type that also does not make many mistakes at all, then you automatically give yourself a fighter's chance against the Pats.

The formula was a little stronger before this season when the D wasn't "bend, don't break" and yielded way fewer yds. Hopefully with the full unit healthy (aside from the 2 on IR), it will stiffen up. I also think the offense is starting to hit its stride and Maclin could be a boost. And hell, who knows, Charles just might be ready to kick some asses by playoff time.

How I define sustainable:

It takes 1500 gallons of fresh water to produce 1 lb. of beef protein.

It takes 1 gallon of fresh water to produce 1 lb. of cricket protein.

Defensive interceptions have a strong luck component as do fumble recoveries. Here is one study that shows defensive turnovers from the first half of the season tend to be uncorrelated with defensive turnovers from the second half of the season. There have been dozens of similar analyses done over the years.
