*** Brett Veach Appreciation Thread ***

I haven't started a thread in many years, but I was thinking this morning (after searching to find one of these type of threads on here) about the Chris Jones scenario. And it would seem to me based on what we know about Veach and Reid, that we shouldn't be concerned.

The ability this team now has to find and develop talent is OTHERWORLDLY.

Chris Jones is an AMAZING talent, but what's the difference between $25m and $30m at the end of the day? Not THAT much. He's set. Jones is just pissed off that the Chiefs didn't sign Frank Clark, so he's being a bitch about it.

But Brett Veach ALWAYS finds a great talent to replace whoever is in there.

He found Patrick Mahomes II and begged the Chiefs to draft him.

The way he assembles teams is something we've never seen in KC and maybe never before seen even in the NFL. And he was born in 1977, IIRC.

So, In Veach I Trust. He will be a pro football Hall of Famer, IMO.

What are some of your favorite things that Veach has done that you'd like to thank him about?

Loved hearing Sirius XM radio’s draft review. Veach took advantage of talented players with preconceived notions.

-Josh Simmons knee
-ONM low snap count
-Gillotte’s shorter arms/smaller hands and “down year” (only 1 less pressure than his big 2023 season)
-Williams lack of elite deep speed (that fits our system)
-Royals foot injury missing time and apparently physical limitations
-Bassa being undersized at weight (but not looking that way on tape)
-Smith only playing RB 1 year

All these guys showed on tape what we want them to be. This isn’t a Kingsley or Felix “developmental” potential thing. They all have decent ceilings at worst.

Doesn’t always work out that way (hello Skyy Moore) but overall it has worked out. Jaden Hicks is the prime example of it to me.

Whats crazy is that i think the two that may have the highest contribution to the team this year are williams and smith.

I think Williams is going to be a day one starter at CB.

I think smith will take a bit, but could carve a role as rb2 by the end of the year, especially Considering hunts age and mitchells injury history.

Royals, Bassa, Guillote and Omar are all at least 3rd or 4th on the depth chart at their positions.

That being said, if Simmons can play by the start of the season he could be the savior or public enemy number 1 by the end of the year. Heres to hoping for 15 years of LT dominance.

Yea their offense and picking in the 20's hasn't been great for WR but they are generally a top 5 drafting team. Most teams would kill for their draft record.

Smith really needs to work on ball security. But imo, he's worth it. Converted wide receiver, you know he's going to be a plus in the passing game.

This draft gave me a similar gut feeling to that 2022 draft. It felt transformational. And we needed this to pursue the goal of reaching 7 SB titles in the Mahomes era.
I feel as if two more titles are well within reach in the next three seasons, if health doesn't become an impediment.

I can see him making the game day roster by being able to return kicks. I can see if that is thw case they eventually give him a package of plays. I think they just might line him up wide like they used to do with Hunt. Force a LB to go with him....

● Natural feel for manipulating space and yard creation
● Ranked top five among FBS running backs in 2024 with 19 plays of 20 yards or more
● Light-footed in his moves, both linearly and laterally
● Accelerates in a blink to quickly eat up grass and outleverage pursuit
● Does a great job keeping his feet underneath him to establish balance at contact
● Not a powerful ball carrier, but he runs with purpose and fight to spin out of tackles
● Former wide receiver and will make an impact beyond the screen game (great feel for the scramble drill)
● Tracks ball well with quick hands/eyes to pull in throws away from his frame
● Brings value as kickoff return man (24.4 yards per attempt over his college career, including a 98-yard touchdown)
● His 18 total touchdowns in 2024 ranked top 12 in the FBS
● Durable and didn't appear to wear down late in games or the season (Mario Cristobal: "He's like a piece of iron. He can go forever.")
● One of only eight FBS players to average more than than 140 all-purpose yards per game in 2024 (141.2)

WEAKNESSES:
● Narrowly built and lacks ideal body mass for the position
● Inconsistent patient and tempo within the play design — lack of experience at the position is often clear
● Revved-up runner and will outrun his blocks
● Too much trust in his speed leads to excessive east-west moves at line
● Unproven as a punt returner
● Benched for first half vs. Stanford (Oct. 2024) for missing classes and team meetings (Lashlee: "He's a great kid. We love him to death. But we
value our culture.")
● Fumbled twice on BYU tape — NFL scouts say he will get down on himself following on-field mistakes and needs to develop a shorter memory
● Gets low and gives up his body as a blocker but angles and technique are underdeveloped

It does look like a lot of the 'return specialists' we picked up are more kick returners than punt returners.

They've all done punts, but they seem to do mostly kicks.

Kicks are easy.

Punts are trickier animals.

Whoever gets that gig is gonna have to earn it. Because our boy Nico was damn dynamic in his own right as a kick returner and demonstrated chops as a punt returner as well. I don't think he'll give that job up lightly. Which is why I don't really have Williams in the running for it - he's just not explosive enough to take the kick job from Remigio and I'm not sure he's experienced enough as a punt returner to win it on those grounds.

So it's Smith and Royals that may be able to grab it and they'll have to be DAMN dependable on those punts to take the job.
