I loved Karlaftis coming out and I love Gillotte.

We are not trying to bend the arc here, this is about collapsing the pocket from every angle.

In that case, maybe Jones kicks out to DE like he likes to do… Karlaftis, Omenihu, ONL, Jones.

Lots of options.

Gillotte is simply one of those defensive linemen that produces. He's not a freakazoid athlete. He doesn't have outstanding measurables. He just learned how to defeat blocks efficiently while getting upfield -- or bending the corner -- in college, and that nuance is rarely seen in trench prospects.

At Louisville, Gillotte pieced together back-to-back seasons with more than 55 quarterback pressures on 363 and 373 pass-rushing opportunities respectively. At a hair under 6-3 and 264 pounds with shorter arms, he demonstrates a unique bend of speed-to-power conversion, an occasional flash of bendiness, and he plays with the pedal to the floor on every snap.

Kansas City needed a secondary outside rusher beyond George Karlaftis, especially given the lack of development for Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Gillotte won't be earning Defensive Rookie of the Year consideration in his debut campaign. He'll be a steady producer from the jump as a rotational piece who can hold up against the run and flash as pass rusher without much attention on him in 2025.

What the **** is he talking about? Gillotte is one of the most athletic defensive lineman in the entire draft.

The dude gave a lot of his NIL money to veterans-focused charities. He’s personable, level, and funny.

How could anyone not love this guy?

Gonna be a lot of fun watching him evolve.

who knows if we'd ever see it but imagine a Nascar package with Gillotte,Danna, CJ and Karlaftis... with Chenal coming off the outside..

Man, that would cause some panic for the QB you'd think.

In what world is Mike Danna part of a 'nascar' package?

He's essentially Charles Omenihu if Charles Omenihu were worse in literally every single way.

Mike Danna is a backup. I wouldn't even call him a viable rotational player as he doesn't have a particular skill-set that is better than anybody in front of him. He's a pure backup caliber player.

We really shouldn't have retained him. He's just not the kind of guy you pay to keep.

Yeah, a few of us criticized that contract but were shouted down.

I think Spags loves him but we need to move on at some point and play other guys.

Yeah - I don't know that I specifically recall what my stance was.

But I've never disliked Danna as a a player. And I think he's a good teammate. And he has a place in the league. Hell, for a solid backup DE that's relatively young and has inside/outside flexibility, the money isn't even bad.

I just have a philosophical opposition to these sorts of moves. It's not terribly dissimilar to the Tranquill deal in that I think you should mostly try to avoid paying 'market' for a guy who's pretty fungible. These are the sorts of guys you should be looking to develop.

And if you don't have one developed already, well that means you've created an opportunity for someone you have on hand who may not have gotten that run yet.

When you have truly great players on your roster and you typically pick at the back of rounds, finding more great players is luck. But finding solid players should be something that's pretty doable.

So keep finding your solid players to replace the solid players that hit FA, bank the cap space to retain/acquire BETTER players and make it happen.

The player and even the contract aren't the problem. It's the philosophy of paying market rates to guys you shouldn't NEED to be paying them for.

Yeah I think that the Chiefs didn’t like Felix’s progress and felt they had to keep this kid. Also helps that he’s a great dude, but he’s an effort rusher without many refined moves or athleticism.

I can’t appreciate enough the diligence this staff put into fixing their weaknesses. They struggled with bigger corners, they struggled getting a pass rush without blitzing most of the season, they struggled covering TE’s and were 24th on 3rd down defense overall.

ONM’s pass rush moves wins/win rate on 3rd down
Gillotte’s athleticism, rush moves and juice as a pass rusher
Williams press man ability and ball skills
Bassa’s coverage ability, particularly against TE’s

It’s not just that they attacked this, but it was with guys who could help fix it now, not developmental players.

Loved that this was their philosophy.

Agreed. It's not always the player or the contract; sometimes, it's the roster spot. Winning in the NFL requires teams to have streams of young players ready to go. You get to have more of those players if you aren't paying fungible vets "market rate."

Everyone hates the Felix pick right now but the Chiefs keep paying Omenihu and Danna. I just don't think Spags likes Felix but I would not be surprised if Felix is a good player on his next team, just won't be here.

Probably because they associate "bend" with athleticism. Prime Von Miller is what people consider athletic. Turn that corner and crunch that QB.
