Meeting Lamar Hunt. Share your stories here.

I'm at a Red Friday function a couple of years ago. I'm getting autographs of the players on my football. I turn around and there's Lamar Hunt all by himself. He asks where would I like him to sign it. I point to where Id like him to sign it and he says why would you want me to sign it there? Don't you want to get someone to sign in that spot that’s good? I said there’s no one better than you Mr. Hunt. He smiled and said okay then and signed the ball. We talked for about 30 seconds or so. He asked what I thought of the Chiefs chances this year and when he left he said it was good to meet me and hope you have fun at the games this year.

I don't know if you'd call it meeting him, but he was walking around in the parking lot just before a game in 2003. He seemed like he was just wandering around, expriencing the tailgating. Kotter and I saw him and I think we said hello and he responded in kind. But I always thought it was the coolest thing that the team's owner would be wandering in the parking lot, stopping at tailgate parties just before the game. Lamar was one of those people who made Kansas City unique. The city will miss him sorely.

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but the Chiefs website opening page has a very nice tribute, some great photographs, and other things relating to Mr. Hunt this morning, including e-mail where you can pass along your thoughts and wishes:

Yep, that was the one that I went out to promote 37 Forever. I had gone by your parents house to grab a table to use out there.

I think that was a different year because I remember being there with you when you got the hat signed. If I were in town you wouldn't have had to drop by to pick up a table.

RIP, Lamar...

not to act non chalant about this (Lamar Hunt was a good friend of my great grandfather, who ran the Chevy plant in KC during the 50's through the early 70's)--but this quote from marty sounds absolutely vermielesque

I was only out there once for a Red Friday event. I probably showed you the hat or something when you were here for 37 Forever weekend.

Perhaps I'm thinking of Steve or somebody else who also got their hat signed by Lamar another year, I went out to the Red Friday event at sportsnutz a couple times.

It's strange how the memory adjusts to fill in the holes even though it might be inaccurate.

Though I have never met Lamar...

My X-FIL worked for the Chiefs since 1973 until he retired 2003 and had very good things to say about Lamar always. The Chiefs are family. Period.

This is a very sad day for all.

The person did not show any impatience while waiting for her call to finish. When she was done, she asked if she could help him. He introduced himself as Lamar Hunt and wanted to know if he could borrow her phone book and telephone. The wife said of course, while thinking to herself, "Well, yeah, you own it".

She said he was in the office several more times and was always very gracious and the perfect gentleman.
That sounds a lot like what Marcus Allen said about him last night on the radio. He said there was one time where Lamar wasn't wearing his pass and one of the security guards at the door wouldn't let him pass because he didn't know who it was, and instead of pulling the, "Do you know who I am?" crap he just walked to another door.

Just sounds like possibly he could have been one of the nicest people ever.

I met him briefly at a fundraiser at some hotel near the Plaza many, many years ago.

A casual meeting. Nothing special. But, he struck me as an extremely classy and elegant person. What I remember most is the fact that I found it difficult to separate the man from the Chiefs. As I shook his hand, I was thinking, "This is the man who started my team." It was a little wierd, to be frank.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hunt. I did receive an invitation to a charity event being hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Hunt for after the first of the year next year. I wasn't sure if I could afford to go - but I may just go now.

A freind of mine got an opportunity to be in the owners suite a few months back for another charity event and raved about how nice Mr. Hunt was.

God bless him.

Carl did the same thing once. Of course, the next day the guard's body was found floating in the Missouri River.

It's a common theme to all of our encounters isn't it? No matter who you are or how you met him he treated you with respect and went out of his way to be nice to you.
