Mangini will have open QB competition again in camp. Why not us?

Now this is what I'd like to hear from our coach.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print...186&type=story

Even though he was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year and led the New York Jets to a surprising playoff berth, Chad Pennington will have to start at square one in 2007 for coach Eric Mangini.

I think Chad did a great job," Mangini said. "Like with every position, we're going to evaluate it as we go. But I really believe in Chad. I just think as a core philosophy, that's what we believe in. In terms of competition, this is no statement one way or the other, but I believe in competition."
And that's OK with Pennington.

"One thing I have learned over the past seven years is that you are not guaranteed anything in this league," Pennington said. "No matter what has happened in the past, it does not guarantee a future. What I am guaranteed is another opportunity to show what I can do and to lead this team. I feel confident in that

Pennington was the face of the franchise, but was coming off a second consecutive shoulder operation. Mangini pushed him to earn the job in a four-way competition. The veteran quarterback responded by playing in all 16 games for the first time in his career and threw for over 3,000 yards for the second time.

"When we head into the next season, we start over at 0-0," Mangini said. "I really believe that. I think this season's in the books. Where we finished is really no indication of what's going to happen next year."

Pennington's primary competition likely will be 2006 second-round pick Kellen Clemens, who saw limited action this season.

I say Herm needs to open up spring training to the KC area to try out for the team as DV did in Philly back in the 70's.

We then need to talk Phil into going in and KICKING Some major ass and making the team ala Vince Papale did for the IGGLES.

We're rootin for ya PHOBs.

I have a lot of confidence in Trent to return to being Trent (not TrINT) next year. That said, I've always sorta wondered why more NFL coaches don't say this type of thing publicly. I think it's the coaches job to put the players on the field with the best chance of to win every week. There should always be a competition going into a new year.

I just happen to think Trent wins that competition each week and next season.

I agree, I like Trent, I think he has been underappreciated by fans and media combined, for most of his career.

I just wonder, at what point do we put some investment to the future. there is only one way to be 100% sure that Brodie can be an NFL QB and I don't want to figure out he's not, when Trent leaves.

After the Clevland game this year the Chiefs lost alot of respect in the leagues eyes, as far as being playoff contenders. At this point in a season, I know "we play to win the game" but why not shift a percentage of the focus on next season. Let some young guys make mistakes in a season that matters less.

BTW, why isn't casey printers even in the debate? He's already proven to an extent in a pro venue.

All Casey Printers has proven to most of us in the preseason is that HE SUCKS MAJOR ASS as a quarterback at the NFL level.

He's got happy feet and no presence in the pocket from what I saw in preseason.

Does it need to be announced "open" to be "open"? Everything I have seen is that Herm is a big fan of Croyle's, so it could be one of those things where the Chiefs see where Green is and if he hasn't got back to what he has been the last few years, then we make the switch.

At least that is the way it should happen, IMO.

Yeah, I didn't get to see the preseason games, sucks living in St. Louis sometimes, miss the plaza scene, fountains, etc.

But when did he get that shot, with all the back up O linemen? I mean the way the starters played, I'd be running too. Put me behind the backups and jeeeezzz.

OT first and foremost to impact our offense the most. shore up the line and see what we have at QB. Like to see a WR in the mix and of course DT too. But without a good O-line, we really stunk it up.

This doesn't surprise me,he also says start over next year..and what the Jets did this year means nothing towards next year..

Forgive me if I'm wrong..but..didn't Hermy claim that Trent would be the starter in 2007 a week or two back??

I think its a non-point. Every team looks at the entire staff in camp. And the position player who does best starts. If you believe otherwise, I have some land in Florida to sell you.
