In light of the idiotic Believer thread, I thought I'd bring some levity to this place. Tonight I finally bit the bullet and bought the A/V receiver I've had my eye on for quite some time, an Onkyo TX-SR804. Got it for 647.00, including shipping, not bad for a receiver with a list price of 1100 bones.

It has HDMI switching and 1080p passthrough built in, 7.1 surround, 7 digital inputs, and 735 watts of power. It also has an RS-232 port so that I can upgrade the firmware down the road (hopefully when HDMI 1.3 rolls around). The best part is that it converts every incoming signal to HDMI, so that I only need to run one cable to my TV. The days of cable spaghetti have ended

It could be ambient background noise fouling the test, I'll try it someday when the dogs are in the garage and the kids are at school..

I absolutely love the reciever tho. I previously had a Harmon Kardon which I really liked as well but I had to get one with HDMI connections..

My TV has two HDMI inputs Sony SXRD 50" but I was hoping there would be a discernable difference in audio using HDMI over Optical, my ear could not tell the difference but each individual speaker seemed to be a little more precise on their assignments..

I found it a little difficult to learn a whole new reciever, but eventually I'll get it down.. You'll probably have it figured out real quick..

You probably won't notice a big difference until you start to see true 8 channel surround from stuff like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD...with that being said, our receivers don't have a DTS-HD or similar 8 channel decoder...however, hopefully this is something that could be accomplished w/ a firmware upgrade...
