Panthers could franchise Peppers

Defensive end Julius Peppers let the Carolina Panthers know he is looking for a change of scenery.

"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released by his agent Carl Carey. "At this point in my NFL career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.

"I strongly feel that making a move at this time is in my best interest. I appreciate the entire Panthers organization and am thankful for the seven seasons I've spent with the team."

The Panthers would have to pay Peppers, 28, nearly $17 million to franchise him for the 2009 season. Peppers has been in Carolina his entire career, seven seasons.

"Julius is firm in his decision that he needs a change," Carey said. "He feels that he can thrive in another system. While he has been selected to four Pro Bowls and designated as an All-Pro during his career, he feels that he has yet to develop to his full potential. This is the case of a great player who seeks to become an elite one."

Senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen contributed to this report.

More critically, I can't see him being nearly as valuable.

He's clearly not a 3-4 end, he's a 3-4 OLB. There's no way he's going to get the contract he wants as a 3-4 OLB.

I think he sees the season DeMarcus Ware just had and wants a piece of that. I don't think he's really thought it through that much.

He'll be a 4-3 end for someone next season.

Julius Peppers is way to big to be playing OLB in a 3-4...

I seriously doubt any team out there is going to want to put a guy who's 6'7 280lbs at OLB.

It's much less likely that Peppers or Suggs would flame out like seemingly every other defensive FA that has come through Kansas City in the past decade or so.
I don't know about Suggs, but I'm confident that Julius is not a lazy **** that will lay down when he gets paid. I'm not sure there is a more motivated player in the league. The fact that you never hear about the dude except on Sundays should work in his favor as well.

Of course, I thought the same thing about Jevon Kearse so what the **** do I know?

I really don't think 3-4 is Pioli's carved-on-stone preference. I think signing Peppers would be a fast giant step toward realistic SuperBowl chances.

It's not a natural fit, but it seems better than putting a speed rusher at end in a 3-4 scheme.

Usually you have to be quick enough and agile enough to drop back and cover to play 3-4 OLB both the outside backers don't rush every single time...unless you're just a situational guy.

It makes sense too. Yes he could get $17 million for next season, barring injury, he would then be 29 next off season. He would get a hell of a lot less money being 29 than 28, and, depending on any agreements that are come to with the NFLPA, could some how, affect his payday next year.

Doesn't Suggs play RDE in a 4-3 right now? He is a stud in either system, which would be a reason I think that Pioli might actually look to sign him. It seems the Pats love versatile guys on their teams, and he can play with a hand on the ground or upright in the 34, plus he is supposed to be level headed and a good team player.

Ok. I dont watch them often obviosuly, but I know at some point I saw him playing DE this year... maybe just a 43 set, or 34 over or whatever they call it.
