If Okung and Bulaga are off the board...

1. Bradford
2. Okung
3. Suh
4. Bulaga
5. ?

I was thinking that Berry would be the logical pick, but just can't imagine Pioli pulling the trigger on a safety this early without looking at other possibilities.

I think it comes down to the following players:

Trent Williams, OT; Oklahoma
Gerald McCoy, DT; Oklahoma
Eric Berry, S; Tennessee

Dorsey was in Haley's dog house to start summer camp and doesn't necessarily fit the profile for a prototype five technique defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. McCoy would be very enticing to a team that had no problem using the third pick in the draft on Jackson, who is playing the seven tech/LDE for the Chiefs.

Williams showed some excellent athleticism at the combine and has the potential to anchor the offensive line at either the RT or LT spot. Albert has been mediocre and inconsistent at best. Wade Smith and Andy Alleman are no longer Chiefs. It's not a reach to think that they would draft Williams and put Albert in at guard - a position he played and excelled at in college.

Berry is an immediate upgrade to the Chiefs defensive backfield. However, he does play a position that typically doesn't have the positional value of others in terms of being a high draft pick. It comes down to the Chiefs believing that he actually is an Ed Reed clone and if that position in the 3-4 scheme is relevant to such a high pick.

No. The Chiefs are not going to settle for the 3rd best OT at number 5. No ****ing way. No way. Not happening. You're assuming Trent williams is a better LT prospect than Albert, which he isn't, and there is no way in haiti that they use the #5 overall on a freaking RT or guard.

Dan Williams on the other hand, i can see them reach for. Reaching for Dan Williams at 5 is not NEARLY has huge of a reach as Trent Williams at 5.

No ****ing way.

What's more important - an offensive tackle (right or left, it doesn't matter) or a safety?

That's really not how you should phrase this argument if you take Williams over Berry you are going to be a laughingstock.

What's more important? Taking the best player, not the third best (arguably) at his position.

Tell me that it couldn't happen. I'm not saying that I'd approve, I'm just throwing out some hypotheticals.

I think that the Chiefs take Berry in that situation, but you've got to be open minded enough to envision that Trent Williams or Gerald McCoy would be possibilities at that point.

Trent Williams = one in every draft (and a NFL RT, most likely)
Dan Williams = one in every two drafts at maximum, more likely is one in every draft
Eric Berry = one in every 7 or 8 drafts
SUH = one in every 15 drafts
Gerald McCoy = one in every three drafts

With more and more teams in the NFL going spread and 3/4 wideouts, a playmaking, rangy safety is becoming one of the more important positions in the NFL.

Depends on the position, and offensive tackle usually supersedes safety in terms of positional value. Case in point:

2009 six offensive linemen were chosen prior to the first safety taken in the draft.

In 2008, NFL teams thought that the 8th best offensive tackle was better than the best safety in the draft.

2007 two offensive tackles were taken prior to "generational" talent safety LaRon Landry.

I don't think that it's much of a stretch from a historical perspective as well as a positional value perspective to see the Chiefs take the third best offensive tackle over the best safety.

Considering Berry is seen as approximately a once-in-a-decade type safety, there's no historical significance to that at all.

Jesus. Listen to yourself.

Put it this way. What would your reaction be if Clausen supporters made the hypothetical of "If Clausen and Bradford are both off the board, we should draft leFevour at 5!!!"
You'd rightly laugh at that idea, as we are all rightly laughing at your dumbass idea.

Look I could see the argument for McCoy the problem here is it either says Dorsey has to go to Jackson has to go and replacing a top 5 pick with another top 5 pick 2 years in seems counterproductive.
