A Meaningless Rant

Did you hear it on Monday? On Tuesday?

The Chiefs have no chance. Why? Because everyone knows that San Diego always controls their own destiny. We're only 8-4 because the Chargers have allowed it...in their benevolence they have allowed the peasants to rise and thump their chests for awhile.

But now, they said, the Chargers are going to rouse us and the rest of the division from our pleasant dreams and remind us that they are still omnipotent and still owners of the AFC West.

Maybe, they said, the feeble Chiefs could come in and make a respectable showing. Perhaps we could run out the clock and lose 24-21, saving face as we witness the great Philip Rivers take the Chargers back off the brink and into the glory of Shank Kaeding's postseason heroics.

And then Matt Cassel's appendix had to come out.

What had been difficult was now impossible. The Chiefs, walking into a game that the Chargers "have to win", will now be lead by Brodie Croyle, whose only victories have come in his bedroom.

Take a look at what the experts say now:
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-networ...without-Cassel

You know what I say? Screw all of them. You know who has to win this game? WE have to win this game. Because we have to go into that toilet bowl and scrub our division of the Chargers' dominance. Because we have to stay in contention to get a first round bye.

Do you hear them, Brodie? They say you can't do it. They say you are weak and terrible.

Do you hear them, Chiefs? They say the Chargers are going to run the table. You are just honored to be in their presence so late in the season.

I say screw all that noise. You are 8-4 and they are 6-6 because you are BETTER than they are. So go into that cesspool and prove it. Tear their hearts through their throats and stake it on the 50 yard line with a flaming spear. Make the Chargers wish the Raiders were back in town. Drive the masses to chant for the pockmarked head of Norvelle in the 3rd quarter.

Tomorrow could represent the tightening of the division. Or you could separate yourselves and get into new echelons of football.

Get 'em.

The Bolts are 6-6. Unless I were a homer of homerific proportions, there is now way I would consider the Bolts an "obvious playoff team".

I had done the stats, and the probability of the Bolts catching the Chiefs or Raiders are 25-30%, so you guys certainly control your own destiny and have the leg up.

However, you lose this game, things will get extremely dicey, as they did for Denver in 2008. That next game of yours at the Rams will be at best a pickem and you will probably be underdogs again.

The Bolts have about as easy a schedule as a playoff team can have the last 3.

There is one AFC West Love Scenario that would bring both teams together in complete and loving harmony:

Ravens lose to Houston, and lose to either Saints or at Cleveland (or Bungles), and the Bolts win out and take the #6 seed, KC wins out last 3 and takes #3 seed. Instant rematch first round.

I've read your forum for the past 6 games or so, and most view this as a nice statement game, but not as big of a 'must win' game.

I would harbour that it is Must Win certainly for the bolts, but also for the Chiefs in a slightly lesser, but still robust, way. Having your backup QB in should make people much more tight in an already tough matchup for you guys.

I dont see that here. I see lots of threads devoted to how good Croyle and his 0-9 record (and arm) are, and how so many fans have that "non dread game feeling" and so on forth.

you must not have read this thread, because my first reply doesn't correlate with not taking this game seriously.

In that case, your reading comprehension skills suck. We have not had a "must win" game in years, and you are misreading hopeful optimism as overconfidence.

Not to mention humor and sarcasm to cover our uneasiness over the QB situation.

The guy just hasn't been around long enough to grasp this place.

I think this is a game that Weis has use the playaction pass on first down over and over again.

We have to establish the idea in the minds of the Chargers that we will not rely solely on the ground game, and a single early play will not establish that.
