Tony Moeaki

I've been watching some tape of the 2010 season. I spent part of the evening just watching Moeaki's own game, what he does each play. How he blocks, what routes he runs (when he's on camera -- I don't have GoChiefs' ****ing amazing coach view), and his blocking assignments.

I'm dead serious when I say this people, but other than lacking top speed explosiveness that you really only see in more one-dimensional athletic TEs, there are zero holes in this guy's game.

Seriously. We have perennial Pro Bowler talent here.

He simply has glue for hands. They are easily the best hands on this team -- with zero no-brainer drops that Bowe is occasionally guilty of. His routes could probably use a little refinement, but he finds good spots in zone coverage and can get that hint of leverage on a defender that Tony G used to be able to get to avail himself for a quick dart.

As good as his hands are, it's his run blocking that truly makes him special. Vernon Davis may be the only tight end in the league that's capable of blocking this good while still being a damn good receiver, and Davis comes with consistency and maturity issues that Moaeki simply doesn't have.

He handles everything from 4-3 DEs and up, and he seemingly gets his way every single time as if he's the team's ****ing blocking tight end.

It's getting to the point where I'm wondering why the Chiefs would EVER take him out of the field.

It's not terribly hard to find a veteran comparison to Moeaki. We've already seen it here in Kansas City for a decade. Tony Moeaki can make every catch Tony Gonzalez was seemingly capable of. He's just as athletic. He might become the better blocker, if he's not already. And he was a team captain at Iowa -- there's simply no reason he can't become the vocal leader Gonzalez was here in Kansas City.

I'm loving watching this kid play. He does his job as well as anybody on the field, he is consistent, and best of all, he's just a pleasure to watch.

Tony G would have had more if he had been the starter for more than 4 games his rookie season.

Moeaki is definately a better blocker than Tony G was early on though.

I thought there were 17 TE's better or equal to him in the draft last year?

Count me in the category of not liking the Moeaki pick when it happened last year. I loved watching the dude in college, but his injury history was the part that I hated.

I'll be anxious to see how many games Tony plays this year. If it's all 16, then I agree 100% with the OP about the high level of greatness we can expect from Moeaki for years to come

He was pretty damn good last year, no doubt. The injury history is still scary, but his skill set is impressive.

I don't know about 17 TEs that were equal to or better, but there were a number of good TEs that made the trade up to get Moeaki seem kind of stupid.

And the next TE that was taken put up numbers similar to Moeaki's.

The injury history was my primary concern, as well, and it seemed to be the primary concern for most that had an issue with trading up to select Moeaki.

Given the talent pool at TE in the draft and his injury history, it seemed a huge risk.

Yes, but he was the best fit for thier offense. Jimmy Graham doesn't have the all around skillset (Ex: blocking ability) that Moeaki does. He may have had similar numbers, but when you factor in the contributions to the respective team's running games it really isn't close.

I understand that, as I understood it at the time of the draft.

But, as I said then, blocking can be taught.

The injury concerns were a huge factor. No question. It's why I knew I could wait till the comp 5th round to take him in the CP mock (for Atlanta, to learn from Tony G first hand)

I showed over and over though, how his injuries were flukes of broken bones and how those type of injuries dont cause lingering issues. Once a bone is healed, it's as strong as ever...sometimes bones heal to be stronger than before.

I am obviously a big Hawkeye fan.

No question.

I honestly don't think it has taken from my objectivity, though.

In the 2010 draft, I was high on Angerer and Moeaki and bother were "re-drafted" by rich gosslein as first rounders.

Fact is, the only Hawkeye player I have been real far off on my evaluation of how he transitions to the NFL (and about what round he will go in) in all my time on message boards was Mitch King.

That kid could have been a stud if he would have kept his nose clean.

Tony Moeaki = Brent Jones

A very good tight end, but not elite or dominant

It seems pointless to revisit this debate now, but the concern wasn't that he would reinjure prvious injuries, but that he had a history of being brittle.

Some people just can't seem to stay healthy for vorious reasons, and his seemed to be brittleness.

It may turn out that was simply bad luck, but until he gets through more than one season relatively unscathed, it remains a concern.

Which is fine.

You don't need an elite TE to win championships.
