If you mean over-rated on technical skill, you'd be wrong. Because I don't know anyone who ranks them highly as a skilled band.

If you mean their influence is over-rated, you're also wrong. Because they completely changed popular music in the 90's. They basically took the exact same sound the Melvins had and added pop hooks to it. It was incredibly popular and changed music forever.

Nobody in the past 3 decades has influenced rock music more heavily than Nirvana.

Yes. Anyone who plays guitar thinks he is.

Welcome to the jungle has 4 keys and 8 key changes. It's a helluva brilliant song. Bands were not doing what Slash was in the late 80's. He was one of the first rock guitarists in that era that wasn't just an Eddie Van Halen wannabe.

Also, Brent Hinds would shred half of this list into pieces, but Mastodon hasn't sold enough albums to make this list.

Honestly even most of the people who omitted from the list that we are arguing about in this thread are not that great!

There are many better players than them, even!

To add to that. Pat Smear played most of the guitar for Nirvana.

1) Except for the fact Cobain shows up on a list of greatest guitarists of all time.

2) Don't deny they were influential or a good band. But your last two statements are exactly the kind of hyperbole I'm talking about.

Not gonna say the best, but the guy got a full arsenal. Love his harmonics

I love it, but this guy picks so much you may just want to skip to 6:25.
Saw him in a club on Bourbon street. His first song, I yelled "little wing" and laughed thinking he couldn't play it LOL.

picking a favorite guitarist is all personal preference, I like Jimi and Page and Vaughn I guess, but it's kinda like picking who's the hottest women ever. Personal preference.

Not before In Utero he didnt, as far as Cobain the guitarist i think theres too much emphasis placed on technical ability & not enough on his ability to wrench emotion out of his songs, i couldnt care less that he wasnt capable of excessive, wankoff solos... his playing perfectly conveyed the twisted emotions he sang about. No one knocks impressionist painters because their work isnt photo quality life like.

As far as Hendrix, i have no qualms with him at #1, he was the first truly revolutionary rock player.
