I don't know how many Catholics there are across the world, but maybe a billion? The Pope is the leader of that church and frankly, is seen as the leader of all the Christian religions in a lot of ways. As such, the Pope has incredible influence over a major portion of the world's population.

There is an estimated 1.3 billion Catholics world wide and about 1 billion Protestants. So roughly 2.3 billion Christians. Roughly 1/2 of all Christians do not follow the Pope.
