Chiefs promote DT Stephen Williams to 53-man roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has agreed to terms of a three-year contract with DT Stephen Williams. The Chiefs also added DE Montez Murphy to the club’s practice squad. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.

Williams (6-2, 306) originally joined the Chiefs as a rookie free agent this season and has appeared in seven games in 2006. He owns five tackles (four solo) and on fumble recovery. Williams has spent four weeks on the team’s practice squad this season.

The Oak Park, Ill. native appeared in 17 games in two seasons (2004-05) at Northwest Missouri State, recording 83 tackles (42 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks (-9.0 yards), an interception and two passes defensed. He tallied 31 tackles (23 solo), 3.0 stops for loss, 1.5 sacks (-4.0 yards), three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble as a senior for the Bearcats. The Bolingbrook High School (Ill.) alum also spent two seasons (2000-01) at Indiana, appearing in 21 contests, amassing 31 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack for the Hoosiers.

Murphy (6-5, 256) was originally added to the club’s practice squad on September 20th where he spent seven weeks, before being added to the 53-man roster on November 18th. He appeared in one game and was inactive for one contest. Murphy originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Green Bay in 2006 and attended training camp with the Packers. He started all 19 games he appeared in during his two-year collegiate career at Baylor. Murphy recorded 72 tackles (46 solo) with 14.5 behind the line, 5.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and three passes defensed.

The Meridian, Mississippi native was a two-sport athlete at East St. Louis High School in East St. Louis, Ill. Murphy led the football team to a 7-3 record as a two-way lineman his senior campaign. He also played center on the school’s basketball team.
