Royals to dump catcher Brayan Pena for Sidney Ponson
Royals to dump catcher Brayan Pena
The Royals must make a roster move before today's game to clear space for veteran right-hander Sidney Ponson, their announced starting pitcher. Ponson opened the season assigned to Class AAA Omaha on a minor-league contract. Club officials indicated the likely move, barring an injury, will be to designate catcher Brayan Pena for assignment. The Royals are unlikely to carry a third catcher in addition to Miguel Olivo and John Buck. Pena, 27, did not play in the three-game series against the White Sox. He is out of options and, barring a trade, would need to be sent through waivers. Even if he clears waivers, Pena has the option of becoming a free agent rather than accept an assignment to Omaha, where his salary would dip from $405,000 to $138,700. -- KC Star |
