Elite QBs, The Salary cap and winning

Does paying an elite QB hamstring your chances of winning?

There has been some ancillary talk about it in some threads, but let's talk about it. If you get a good QB and you pay them what they're worth, does it inhibit your ability to sign (or keep) good enough players around that QB to win?

Obvious example is a $20M QB just got punked by $600K QB last night. But looking back to to last year's SB winner, BALT paid Flacco, and had to cut most of their playmakers. Brady is making bank, and doesn't have much around him. Rodgers hasn't done much since they backed the Brinks truck up. IIRC, after Brees signed his big money deal, they've made noise, but not like before.

I'm definitely interested to hear what some of the people smarter about the salary cap think about this topic.

I'm of the opinion that you have to be a kick ass drafter to win. Young, fast, talent wins. Period. Whether it is at WR, CB, Pass rush, DL, LT, you can't afford to pay for elite talent outside at all those positions. You can maybe bring in a marquee guy, at one, but you're going to have to fill the rest with drafted guys, and they had better be good.

I think about Houston. He's going to get a lot of money, but if he's the only passrush you have that's worth a shit, you're boned. You need to have him pair with some young, cheap guys you can get production from. Same with CB, WR, and DL. One guy doesn't make a unit.
