There is a portion of this fan base that hated him just for that.

And even more fans who gave him grief over every small mistake, yet shrugged their shoulders when Alex smith threw a bad pass. There's no doubt there was a sizeable group of fans who wanted him to fail. Even more than most players who actually sucked.
