Chiefs fans in Kali-forn-ya!!
I am very disappointed by the number of enthusiastic sports fans in California, in general. I did finally find a nice sportsbar to frequent on Wilshire Boulevard, called "Q's Billiards", but I haven't found anywhere to watch pay-per-view boxing events, or games like last Friday's Chiefs game. I literally flew to Miami to see that one because the tickets were so cheap.
Now, I stated earlier that I seldom wear uniforms, but I wasn't thinking clearly because I am always wearing some sort of NFL promotional merchandise. Hats, jerseys, t-shirts, necklaces, etc. This goes over like a lead balloon in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, and I've had to change my dress code to fit in on occasion. People really look at me like I'm crazy for being so into my sports teams. 'Course they're all wearing yuppie clothes and girlish jewelry, so I don't take it too seriously. I bought two really nice $65.00 embroidered hats, one CHIEFS and one VIKINGS, during the pre-season. I decided to promote whichever team had the best record or game at Q's each week. I had only worn the Vikings hat once this season, 'til this week gave me the opportunity to wear them both a bit. Now that I'm a "regular" at this place, the waitresses have sort of warmed up to me, and I've noticed that other people are doing the "two hat" thing and started to wear their colors. I feel as though I have started something... or revived it, at least. Every time I see the sea of red at Arrowhead, I am reminded that I am not alone in my passion for the game and my favorite team(s). Still, I wonder if some of you that don't live in Kansas City run into similar distasteful attitudes toward your supporting the team in public? I also wonder why all the hoopla about getting an NFL Team back into the L.A. area still goes on? Doesn't everyone remember that no one supports NFL Teams here? Hell, I remember driving down from S.F. many times to see the Rams or Raiders play the Chiefs, because the tickets were always available and cheap. The R-aiders can't even sell out the Oakland Stadium, and even the 49ers are discounting tickets now that they suck so bad. What's going on???? Where's the love? The NFL has to do something to bring the fans back to the stadiums!! I love NFL Sunday Ticket as much as the next guy, but blacking out games when they don't sell out also sucks. Thankfully I was here instead of Norther California a few weeks back when the Chiefs visited the Raiders. I would've had to wear red into the Faders home stadium and risk life & limb. |
