Mangini will have open QB competition again in camp. Why not us?
Now this is what I'd like to hear from our coach.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print...186&type=story Even though he was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year and led the New York Jets to a surprising playoff berth, Chad Pennington will have to start at square one in 2007 for coach Eric Mangini. I think Chad did a great job," Mangini said. "Like with every position, we're going to evaluate it as we go. But I really believe in Chad. I just think as a core philosophy, that's what we believe in. In terms of competition, this is no statement one way or the other, but I believe in competition." And that's OK with Pennington. "One thing I have learned over the past seven years is that you are not guaranteed anything in this league," Pennington said. "No matter what has happened in the past, it does not guarantee a future. What I am guaranteed is another opportunity to show what I can do and to lead this team. I feel confident in that Pennington was the face of the franchise, but was coming off a second consecutive shoulder operation. Mangini pushed him to earn the job in a four-way competition. The veteran quarterback responded by playing in all 16 games for the first time in his career and threw for over 3,000 yards for the second time. "When we head into the next season, we start over at 0-0," Mangini said. "I really believe that. I think this season's in the books. Where we finished is really no indication of what's going to happen next year." Pennington's primary competition likely will be 2006 second-round pick Kellen Clemens, who saw limited action this season. |
