So my daughter was called to the principals office the other day...
... and was informed that she's been named student of the month for the second month in a row! It's the first time anyone has ever gotten it two months back to back. She's 10 years old and in 5th grade. I'm so damn proud of her I can't see straight.
She was basically "assigned" a couple of months ago to mentor a new spanish girl who speaks very little english. She shows her around, plays with her at recess, helps her with work, and trys to teach her some english words while picking up some spanish herself. My daughter says the girl is really shy and sometimes just kind of hides behind her when they are in a crowd. Raven (my daughter) basically looks out for her and I think it's becoming vise-versa a little bit. Raven is also the "lead biologist" in her class room. They have 107 different animals in the room... fish, turtles, lizards, hamsters, salamanders, spiders etc... and she is in charge of making sure they are feed each day and oversees other kids in their responsibilities with them. She's gotten good behavior awards before but this is a really proud thing for me as daddy. I have the best kid ever. She's extremely caring and generous and even looks out for me... even though I tell her she doesn't need to do that since I'm the "adult." I worried about how she'd get along since she is a child of divorce... about a year and a half ago. She's blown me away with her ability to make the best of a bad situation. She's taught me that it is possible for an adult to take inspiration from a child. Just wanted to share some good news. Thanks for humoring me. |
