Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/19
Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/19
Sep 19, 2008, 1:25:33 PM Highlights Q: You said that Will Franklin was coming along; do you expect him to play this week? HERM EDWARDS: “Yeah, he’s got a chance. He sure does. I think he helps us. A big strong receiver. Now, this is the first time he’s played in a (regular season) game. We’ll see how he reacts. He’s excited and has come back very fast. He looks pretty good.” Q: Did Tamba Hali get hurt in practice? EDWARDS: “A little bit yesterday. He came back sore and we’ll see where he’s at with his knee.” Q: Comment on Rudy Niswanger. EDWARDS: “Rudy has done a good job for us. He really has. Played some (last year) and got hurt. This is really his first year of starting. Very smart, kind of tall but is a good player. He’s gotten an opportunity, good on making offensive calls. He’s another young guy who is playing a lot. To me, he’s like a rookie playing because I think he only played one or two games last year before getting hurt. I think the more he plays the better he’ll become.” Q: How about Brian Johnston? EDWARDS: “Yeah, he’s not ready for a full boat, not ready for 40 plays. But we’ll get him in there. He’s been in some on special teams. He’s going to play a lot this week especially if both (Hali, McBride) can’t go.” Q: What do you pay your attention to or who’s more disappointing: the defense giving up 300 yards rushing or the offense not being able to score? EDWARDS: “I don’t think it’s one group or the other. I think everybody’s disappointed. There was good intensity. They didn’t perform well. They have to play better this week.” Q: Are they rallying around Tyler Thigpen? EDWARDS: “They understand where he’s at. He’s like so many of them: a young player playing. The problem is he’s the quarterback. So, that even makes it a little bit bigger. As the week’s go on he knows he has to be calm. He’s the one that has to determine what goes on with that football.” Q: Do you feel like this is a winnable game and a chance to get some momentum going? EDWARDS: “We just need to win a game, period. We feel that way every week. We had our chances the first game and had chances the second game. It was 6-0 at halftime (vs. Oakland), the same kind of game as New England, 7-3. I just think we didn’t give ourselves a chance in the second half last week. It’s still only a 6-0 game. These guys got to understand they’ve got to keep playing. You can’t let a big play upset your energy. I think the big run hurt us last week. It took something out of us. We didn’t recover. “Then offensively when we got going we gave them a big run and that’s how it went. This is a new time, a new game.” Q: I know you don’t listen to the outside, but how do you respond to people who say you don’t want to win this game? EDWARDS: “I think if they know football teams and study football, players and coaches want to win. You try to put the best players in a position to win. We’re trying to win with Tyler. I think we’re losing sight of is if Tyler struggles Damon Huard can come play. It’s not like Damon Huard isn’t going to get to play if something bad happens. Tyler deserves a chance and we’ll never know unless we let the young guy play. It just happens he’s the quarterback. It’s okay if anyone else plays but if you say the quarterback, then it’s go with Damon Huard again. Well, that’s fine but you can always go with Damon Huard. But we want Tyler to play and we think he can give us an opportunity in what we’re trying to do. Running the football and doing some things where he’s just not standing back there in the pocket. We have to look at him because we want to know: is he a two, is he a three. Is he a one. No one knows and we have to find out. We kind of know what Damon Huard is. Right now people say he may say he gives you the best chance to win. Maybe he does. We don’t think that. We think whoever we put in there gives us the best chance to win and it happens to be Tyler this week. |
