Charlie Weis: Brady Quinn could have started for me in the NFL

At Notre Dame, Charlie Weis and Brady Quinn had a lot of success together. Weis says that if they had had the chance in the NFL, he and Quinn would have had a lot of success together at the next level, too.

Weis, who’s now the head coach at Kansas but has previously been an offensive coordinator in the NFL with the Chiefs and the Patriots, says he knows that his offense could work in the NFL, with Quinn running it.

“Brady could have been a starting quarterback for me in the NFL,” Weis told the Kansas City Star.

After the Browns made him a first-round draft pick in 2007, Quinn started just 12 games in three years in Cleveland and was not effective. For the last two years he was a backup in Denver and now he’s a backup in Kansas City. But Weis insists that if he were in the NFL again, he knows he and Quinn could run a great offense together.

“Go back and look at those numbers for the two years he played for me,” Weis said. “He was great. He wasn’t good. And I know if I had him as a quarterback, I would have felt very comfortable that I could have won no matter where we were.”

Weis’s offense was not successful during his season as coordinator in Kansas City, but he seemed to hint that former Chiefs head coach Todd Haley was more to blame for that.

“When [fans] read through the lines,” Weis says, “they can figure out the whole year that I was there. They can figure it [from] the beginning, to right through the end. They can kind of read through everything there. But I really enjoyed my experience, my one year with the Chiefs.”

And Weis thinks that if he were ever an NFL coach with Quinn as his quarterback, he’d enjoy that experience, too. But it’s probably safe to say that’s not going to happen.
