Our situation is wanting to win now while building for the future. And running the Reid version of the WCO. A QB that can win now, and for the next two or three years, while we look for that young QBotF. Was there a better QB available given these qualifiers?

Signing a free agent stopgap rather than trading 2 picks for a stopgap.

IMO signing a crap QB and losing for another season or two was NOT a better option. |

Agreed. This whole argument is contingent upon how much Smith wins here. Until he starts shitting the bed and we start looking like the losers our team has been for far too long I am happy to have the wins. I'll wait to start moaning until it hurts.

Smith was the option.
Period. He's exactly what Reid wants in a QB - smart, mobile, takes care of the ball and he's accurate. The only other option in my mind was to sign Jason Campbell and draft Geno Smith, letting Campbell play out two years on a free agent deal while Geno worked under Reid to become NFL ready. But getting A Smith in his prime after the season and a half he put together in 2011 and 2012 was a major win for the Chiefs. He's not flashy, but he's been absolutely productive since the dump of Mike Singletary, who might have been the one worse coach than Crennel over the past decade. Smith is 29 and is in the prime of his career. He's putting up wins like nobody else, and considering that he's getting these wins on teams that were complete dog shit (2010 49ers, 2012 Chiefs) is impressive. The guy knows how to orchestrate a team on and off the field. The Chiefs had the personnel to win right now and Dorsey and Reid saw that. They brought in the one QB who was capable of leading this team in a positive direction immediately as well as establishing one of the strongest coaching staffs I've ever seen on an NFL team. This team hasn't even come close to hitting it's stride on either side of the ball due to the newness of coaching and scheme changes. And we're still 3-0 with two of those wins on the road. Not too shabby. |

This team with Alex Smith and last year's defense is 1-2 going into today's game, and 5 win team for the season, 6 wins at best.
With a Stanton, Gradkowski, Campbell, they are 1-2 right now and a 4 win team. These Chiefs are winning because of scheme change, personnel upgrades, and player improvement on defense. There might be one or two games that Smith won't lose this season that a free agent QB might. But Alex Smith is not winning these games. The defense is.

Winning just enough to justify locking Axl up long-term, thereby putting us in the same goddamned rut we've been in forever.

Not saying Smith is a world beater (nevr have) but he is built to play in specific type offense on a team with a defense like this. What he will do is keep drives moving and keep the TOP in our favor and as you know not turn the ball over. Alex completed 4 long passes on 3rd down Thursday while on the other hand we couldn't convert on 3rd and short the whole game. But hey, he isn't helping win any games. Oh I see you wont be happy unless he does it all by himself. |

Good grief dude. Our 3rd down conversion rate sucks because we cant run it on 3rd and short. 0-6 on 3rd and 2 or less. Think about it. You are a prime example of someone who likes to bitch about things but dont look at what the real issues is. Somehow you are going to try to turn an inability to run on 3rd and 1 to a QB issue. |
