Next time you get a chance to talk about the job situation, I'd say:

"Here's the thing man. With the job market so tight, employers are getting super picky. You have to leave no stone unturned to make a good impression. Seriously, get a new suit, haircut, bleach your teeth, make sure your breath is totally clean, whatever you have to do. There's no shame in putting your absolute best foot forward, it's probably the only thing separating you from some other idiot they hire who is less qualified. Ya gotta play the game man..."
