Drafting in 2014 for the 2015 cap
by Planetdoc

Reggie McKenzie (a Ron Wolf disciple like John Dorsey) said this
Quote:
You draft for the future. You don’t draft for right now.
When you look at the chiefs 2014 cap, it should be obvious that certain players are locked in because there would be no benefit cutting them.

For example, Bowe and AJ Jenkins will be chiefs in 2014 because their contracts are guaranteed. Same could be said of Donnie Avery since the savings from cutting him make it worthless to do so. There is really no player in which the chiefs have a strong incentive in replacing with a draft pick because those players (Alex Smith, Eric Berry, DJ, Hali) are still core players.

Things change drastically for 2015.

As another article stated
Quote:
Draft picks are so cheap right now...that they are incentivized to just pay about four or five star players and have the rest of the team near or at minimum contracts. Under this new CBA this trend is here to stay.
One can see that there is a strong incentive to replace these players if they are not playing as a star player:
WR: Bowe, Avery, AJ Jenkins
DB: Flowers, Sean Smith, Berry
LB: Hali, Mays, DJ,
DL: Devito,
RB: jamaal Charles
QB: Chase Daniel
K: succop
TE: Anthony Fasano

Thus the 2014 needs in preparation for 2015 are:

2-3 WR
2-3 defensive backs
1 OLB
2 ILB
