Yeah, tough to say. Part of it may be that they don't appear to do a lot of mega threads for live events. The formula for dragging down the database is:

Big Thread + Lots of people refreshing the thread at a time = DOOM!!!
(aka, live sports events when something exciting happens)

Or it could just be that they're able to throw a lot more hardware at it than we can. Or maybe they've figured out some way to better optimize the database.
